When Was the Sequel Confirmed?

Disney announced Lilo & Stitch 2 on 6/26, a fun reference to Stitch’s government name, Experiment 626.

In a teaser released by the entertainment giant, Stitch drives a hot-pink convertible through the Disney lot as he shouts, “Get ready. Here we go!” In the description, Disney comments, “Should’ve known he couldn’t keep a secret. A 626 day surprise: #LiloandStitch is now in development!”

What’s Lilo & Stitch 2 About?

While the first film focuses on the blue extraterrestrial, Stitch, who crash-lands in Hawaii and is adopted by Lilo and her older sister Nani, there is still a lot up in the air about Lilo & Stitch 2. As of now, Disney has not announced the details, including the creative team, plot details, or release timeline.

However, we can speculate about what the sequel will entail from the ending of the first film. Unlike the animated original, Nani leaves Lilo and Stitch behind in Hawaii to travel out of state to study marine biology. But an ending sequence with alien technology may not make this separation last for long.

Plus, a late-movie sequence reveals an alien computer screen with other notable experiments you may recognize from Lilo & Stitch: The Series, such as Angel, Reuben, and Experiment 627. These could all play a part in the second film, but in reality, there is tons of animated material for the production team to choose from.

Success of the First Film Remake

The live-action film has done remarkably well at the global box office.

Just one week after the movie premiered, Lilo & Stitch pulled in $610.8 million globally, and this number has only increased to over $910 million. If the trend continues, the originally planned straight-to-streaming release will be the year’s first billion-dollar blockbuster. And that’s not even considering the on-demand, digital, or streaming numbers.

Before all the success in the theaters, Disney was already anticipating what sequels would look like. Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Alan Bergman even commented, “It feels like it’s going to work very well, and it’s the kind of property that lends itself to more.”

Legacy of Lilo & Stitch

Lilo & Stitch has always been a favorite in fans’ hearts ever since its release in 2002. Stitch-themed merchandise has been one of the biggest moneymakers for Disney, and in 2024, the company sold $2.6 billion in consumer products featuring Lilo & Stitch characters.

This number will probably only increase with the prospect of a Lilo & Stitch 2 live-action movie.

Success and Failure of Recent Live Action Films

Lilo & Stitch quickly became one of Disney’s more successful remakes. It joins the ranks with 2019’s The Lion King, 2017’s Beauty and the Beast, and 2019’s Aladdin.

However, not every Disney live-action remake has been a smash at the box office. This year’s Snow White and 2019’s Dumbo are just a couple of the box office failures.
