A Minecraft Movie premiered last Friday, and it is already shattering box office expectations in a huge way.

If you thought Minecraft was just a phase, think again! The kids can’t get enough of it.

A Minecraft Movie Is A Massive Hit

The live action adaption of the 2011 video game Minecraft grossed a whopping $162.75 million domestically in its opening weekend. It had initially been expected that this movie would gross just $60 million. This estimate was later adjusted to about $100 million.

“This is the first major over-performance,” Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, told CNN.

“Pre-sales and interest accelerated in a remarkable way during the run-up to opening night,” aded Shawn Robbins, director of movie analytics at Fandango and founder of Box Office Theory.

Box office analyst David A. Gross chimed in to say that this video game adaptation appeals to broad audiences, rather than to critics.

“When a release catches fire like this, it generates its own momentum and you can set aside all projections,” Gross said.

A Minecraft Movie Shatters Records

Indeed, A Minecraft Movie is now the biggest domestic opening weekend for a film based on a video game.

“There is a treasure trove of storytelling and (intellectual property) in that arena, making it a sweet spot where the industry can meet young moviegoers and general audiences who’ve become more selective,” Robbins explained.

Robbins went on to describe the first quarter of 2025 as a “historically slow movie-going season.”

“We’re finally going to see light at the end of the tunnel after a pretty dismal March,” Dergarabedian concluded.

If it comes as a surprise, consider how successful Minecraft has been. Since 2014, the popular game has raked in $3 billion! And unlike other franchises, the purpose of Minecraft is to build neat things, as opposed to other popular games built around wanton violence.
