Kevin Costner just got some bad news, as the August release of Horizon: Chapter 2 has been cancelled. This came after Horizon: Chapter 1 bombed at the box office.

Costner Gets Bad News

Chapter 2 had long been set to be released on August 16. However, Territory Pictures and New Line Cinema are now delaying the release of the second Horizon movie. They’re doing this in “order to give audiences a greater opportunity to discover the first installment of Horizon over the coming weeks, including on PVOD and Max.”

It should be noted that no release date for Horizon on MAX has been revealed at this time. Indeed, this decision came after the first Horizon movie made just $23 million in its first two weeks in theaters.

Costner has put all his eggs in the basket of the Horizon movie series. He’s previously invested $38 million of his own money into Horizon: The American Saga. Costner not only is starring in the film series, he’s also directing it. He additionally co-wrote it with John Baird.

Costner Working On Chapter 3 Of Horizon

Last month, Costner revealed that he was already in the middle of filming Chapter 3 of Horizon.

“We’ve shot about 13 days of it, and we’re coming back in August to finish it off,” he told Entertainment Tonight at the time.

“I saw [Chapter 2] yesterday, and I’m really happy to be able to say that it’s just as good as 1, and maybe better,” he added.

Meanwhile, in another interview last month, Costner admitted that Horizon was the hardest project he’s ever worked on.

“You can look at the obvious, of how long it took [to finish],” Costner later told Fox News. “I directed Dances With Wolves in 106 days…Horizon is arguably as big as that, and we did it in 52 [days]. The only reason that happened was because of the people that were with me. We just never stopped working.”
