The latest Marvel movie Captain America: Brave New World is set to hit theaters tomorrow. Marvel took a huge swing with this movie in the hopes of turning around their fortunes after the last few products have underperformed.
Unfortunately for Marvel, however, it seems that even this new version of Captain America was not enough to rescue the studio from more or less mailing it in.
Marvel’s ‘Terrible’ New Movie
The New York Post savaged this new Marvel movie in a scathing oped entitled “Captain America: Brave New World: Sorry, Marvel is still terrible.”
For a bit of background for those who aren’t familiar, the Captain America thus far portrayed in a dozen movies by Chris Evans has been “retired,” and replaced by his former second-in-command, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson, aka The Falcon.
Considering Evans-as-Cap was one of the most popular characters, the move was playing with fire. According to some reviews, it hasn’t worked out the way Marvel hoped.
“If you thought Marvel Studios was committed to getting back on track by making fewer but higher-quality movies, wait ’til you see Captain America: Brave New World,” began reviewer Johnny Oleksinski.
Oleksinski went on to describe this film as being “another major disappointment from the crumbling Marvel Cinematic Universe.” He warned fans that this is the “worst” of all the Captain America movies “by a wide margin.”
Considering how unspectacular Civil War was, that’s saying something.
“Shield your eyes,” Oleksinski urged viewers. He later added that “Brave New World, with its lofty Shakespearean-Huxleyan title, tries and fails to be a political Marvel movie.”

Captain America: Brave New World Fails Miserably
Oleksinski found that the plot is both ridiculous and hard to follow. He also stated that all attempts that the movie made to be funny fell flat. Funny, since they fired the comedian Chris Evans.
“Something reliable about Brave New World is that laughs only come when they’re not supposed to,” Oleksinski quipped.
Ouch, that has got to hurt for Marvel!
Ominously, the movie tasks the main character Wilson (Anthony Mackie) with rebuilding the Avengers. Clearly, the film serves more or less as a vehicle for Marvel to set up even more movies.
“The world needs the Avengers,” Wilson says at one point.
“Do we, though?” Oleksinski asked in response at the conclusion of his review.
It depends on who you ask. Over at Hollywood in Toto, writer Christian Toto says it’s not all that bad.
“Mackie must serve as a bridge to future “Avengers” films while restoring the MCU’s luster.
The “Hurt Locker” alum is up to the task in the moderately satisfying sequel. A few nips and tucks could have elevated the character in ways the struggling franchise demands,” Toto writes, with the ultimate verdict that it’s hit-or-miss.

Marvel Has Done Too Many Of These Movies
It’s become painfully obvious that Marvel has made far too many of these movies. Indeed, audiences are clearly getting tired of them. This has been reflected in the box office, with returns going down in recent years.
The quality of Marvel movies have also been going downhill steadily in recent years. Silly gimmicks can no longer distract from poor scripts and downright bad filmmaking. Audiences have shown that they see right through the tricks that Marvel could once hide behind, and they aren’t having any of them anymore.
Marvel put a lot of their eggs in the Captain America: Brave New World basket. The studio is undoubtedly heading into tomorrow hoping for the very best in terms of box office numbers.
Unfortunately for Marvel executives, however, it seems that they’re likely in for a bitter disappointment. In the end, they shouldn’t be surprised if they have yet another flop on their hands!
