Warfare Synopsis

Get ready for an action-packed film that won’t let up until the end credits roll. Here is a synopsis for the latest addition to A24’s lineup:

“Written and directed by Iraq War veteran Ray Mendoza and Civil War director Alex Garland, Warfare embeds audiences with a platoon of American Navy SEALs in the home of an Iraqi family, overwatching the movement of US forces through insurgent territory. A visceral, boots-on-the-ground story of modern warfare, told like never before: in real-time and based on the memory of the people who lived it.”

Why is Warfare Different Than Other Films?

While numerous war-related films and TV series have been made over the decades, there’s something different about Warfare. The movie may have a star-studded cast, but that’s where the similarities end. Instead, it’s an exercise in achieving total, unfiltered authenticity from beginning to end.

Director Ray Mendoza was part of the SEAL mission that inspired the film and has spent the following 18 years collecting the memories of his fellow brothers from that fateful day. Mendoza dived into Hollywood alongside director Alex Garland in Civil War, and both are back in Warfare.

The two wanted to create a film that focused on “stripping out all tools that would be available normally in cinema,” Garland said. This means there is no score, no narrative embellishment, and every story beat is drawn from the memories of the men there that day.
