A Detroit mother is experiencing unimaginable heartache and anger after discovering Detroit police didn’t inform her that her missing daughter’s body was found seven years ago.

Rosita Cage-Toaster had been searching for her 28-year-old daughter Crissita since her October 2009 disappearance. She never gave up hope they would reunite. That hope was destroyed last week when Cage-Toaster learned that her daughter had been buried by authorities in an anonymous grave after her body was found five months after her disappearance.

Immediately after the disappearance, the family put up missing posters and filed a police report. They mentioned that Crissita had a distinctive rose tattoo.

This April, the distraught mother reached out to a national missing persons organization. Much like she had with Detroit authorities, Rosita told them to focus on the tattoo as a way to identify her daughter.

“Please focus on the tattoos, one descriptive tattoo was the one with a big rose that said me and my husband’s name, our nicknames, Blue and Ro,” she said.

That organization contacted the Detroit Police Department and quickly learned there was a match with the tattoo. The Toasters daughter had been buried without their knowledge. They now are hoping to have her body exhumed and given a proper burial.

Authorities had identified Crissita’s race as being Hispanic or Caucasian, rather than African-American. Drowning was the cause of death and her body had been in the water for enough time that it is believed her skin coloring was affected. But, her distinctive tattoo was noticed and even mentioned in her autopsy report.

Realizing that seven years had passed since her daughter’s body was found and buried is a sobering thing to learn. Rosita is hoping this will never happen to another family and better procedures will be put into place.

More information and an interview with the devastated mother is in the video below.

While Crissita drowned, the circumstances regarding her death are unknown. Her car was found shortly after her disappearance. Her cell phone and ID were inside the vehicle.

This family sure could use our prayers as they deal with the news that their daughter has been dead for almost eight years and they were never notified.
