Directed again by Simon McQuoid, the second movie is scheduled to arrive in theaters on October 24, 2025. But here’s a first look at the trailer and what you need to know about the film.
The first film follows Cole Young, a washed-up mixed martial arts fighter who is unaware of his hidden lineage of why the assassin Sub-Zero is hunting him down. Concerned for the safety of his family, he seeks out a clique of fighters who were chosen to defend Earthrealm against Outworld.
After a live stream event that unveiled all the character posters for the movie, the Mortal Kombat 2 trailer was finally released on July 17, 2025, which welcomes Johnny Cage to the movie franchise and teases the story for the long-awaited sequel.
Upon release, though, the trailer shattered records with a massive viewership, amassing 106.8 million views in the first 24 hours of release, signifying the excitement fans have for the movie. This breaks the record for the most viewed red-band trailer ever, surpassing The Suicide Squad, Deadpool 2, and the previous Mortal Kombat movie.
So, what can fans expect from the second movie after watching the Mortal Kombat 2 trailer? Karl Urban joins the cast as Johnny Cage, a Hollywood playboy who’s one of the most famous human characters in the video game franchise. Also joining the team is Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, the deadly princess who wields steel fans as a weapon choice.

Based on the trailer, though, Johnny Cage will be the main character in the second movie and will represent Earthrealm in the tournament. The record-breaking numbers will hopefully not lead to disappointment, as the first film was underwhelming to say the least. Fans are excited to see the second movie and are hoping for big things when it makes its way to the big screen in October.
