Royal watchers cheered on Monday as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge introduced their newborn Prince to the world. Their son was appropriately born on St. George’s Day, but something else poignant happened.
Just seven hours after giving birth to the Prince, Kate Middleton stepped outside of the hospital before going home. She looked so remarkable that it’s almost unbelievable that she gave birth a handful of hours before. Her dress especially had a lot of people feeling nostalgic as it seemed to be a tribute to Prince William’s mother, Princess Diana.
The red dress with lace collar looks remarkably similar to the one that Princess Diana wore when she stood on the same steps of the Lindo Wing of St. Mary’s Hospital and introduced Harry to the world.

Not only was it a sweet tribute to the Prince’s grandmother and the people’s Princess, but it was also an appropriate color choice since the child was born on St. George’s Day. It’s a day to celebrate English culture. St. George is the protector of the Royal family and the patron saint of England during the Middle Ages. His cross is used as the English flag and is prominent on the Union Jack flag of Great Britain.
“What better day to fly the flag than on St. George’s day and next to William in blue with the newborn Prince swaddled in white, a red dress was the perfect choice for Kate,” Helen Canning Ford, stylist and blogger said about Kate’s choice of dress.

Princess Diana died over 20 years ago, but her sons still look for ways to remember and honor her. She would have been overjoyed at becoming a grandmother for the third time. Kate’s dress is a subtle and graceful way of paying homage to the beloved princess.
