But why are people going crazy over this movie? And why should you care? Three years ago, video game developer David Szymanski released a horror game called Iron Lung, which follows a criminal who travels in a small submarine while venturing across a blood ocean on a barren moon.

The game is all about the familiar horror aspects and suspenseful setting with interesting and unique mechanics, which drew the attention of a beloved YouTuber, Markiplier, aka Mark Fischbach. The game was so beloved that the YouTuber decided to make a movie adaptation to honor it.

While the game only lasts about one to two hours, depending on how you play it, the game quickly became one of the biggest indie horror games. And now, after years in the making, Fischbach announced this week that his self-releasing, self-financed movie about the game will arrive in select theaters early next year, January 30.

The official synopsis of the movie reads: “The stars are gone. The planets have disappeared. Only individuals aboard space stations or starships were left to give the end a name — The Quiet Rapture.”

“After decades of decay and crumbling infrastructure, the Consolidation of Iron has discovered on a barren moon designated AT-5. An ocean of blood. Hoping to discover desperately needed resources, they immediately launch an expedition. A submarine is crafted, and a convict is welded inside. Due to the pressure and depth of the ocean, the forward viewport has been encased in metal. If successful, they will earn their freedom.”

The trailer gives off the perfect ominous tone that the game offered, creating suspense in a closed container. The trailer quickly gives fans a look into the terrifying situation that the main character is in. When the voice on the intercom gives directions, Mark then asks if this has been tested before, to which the voice says simply, “This is the test.”

The drama only escalates, turning into a chilling scene as characters argue in the trailer, and eventually, the submarine starts to suffer with blood pouring in.

The trailer ends with the final voiceover weakly saying, “I just want to live. Is that so wrong?”

While Iron Lung wrapped up filming in 2023, the wait is almost over. Mark Fischbach has kept the hype going. In fact, the movie broke the record for having the most amount of blood in a film ever, with over 50,000 gallons of fake blood to bring the crimson blood ocean to life.

While Mark Fischbach is starring as the main lead, Seán McLoughlin, known for his YouTube channel, Jacksepticeye, will also voice a part in the movie. Elsie Lovelock, Elle LaMont, and Caroline Kaplan are also featured in the movie.

Check your local theaters to see if they’ll be showing Iron Lung, which releases January 30, 2026. And be sure to watch the Iron Lung trailer, as well as Markiplier’s Iron Lung game playthrough, to get in the know before the movie releases.
