A kind-hearted grandma who allowed a handful stray cats to live in her enclosed porch in Kansas recently got a shock regarding one of her beloved pets.
When Eric Hertlein went to visit his grandma, he was surprised when he saw her new friends on the porch. He noticed some cats, but there was someone not very cat-like laying in one of the beds. He instantly assumed the opossum, snuggled up alone in the cat bed, had just wandered in. Imagine his surprise when Grandma told him the little creature didn’t just appear. She had been caring for it for months. She had even named him Tete!
“She reassured me it was one of her cats,” Eric told The Dodo. “I told her it wasn’t what she thought it was.” Grandma wasn’t buying it. She loved that critter and didn’t understand why Eric couldn’t believe that it was a cat. But, it wasn’t a cat!
“I laughed for a good five minutes,” Eric chuckled. “She didn’t realize what I was laughing about until I started pointing out the pointy nose and skinny tail. She didn’t realize he wasn’t a cat.”
“She kinda just sat there,” Eric said. “Then she got a little closer … and slowly looked up at me with the biggest grin on her face and said, ‘Well, he hasn’t bothered me yet, so I’m OK with him being here!'”
It’s hard to understand how she didn’t realize he wasn’t a cat! He looks quite different than any feline I have ever seen!
Eric’s grandma accepted Tete as a cat when he arrived. What’s even funnier is that the cats accepted him as one of their own as well! Everyone welcomed him in! When she discovered the truth, Grandma wasn’t dismayed. He still was her Tete after all. That speaks a lot about the kind heart she has.
Eric believes the opossum was orphaned. Tete was just a baby when he showed up at Grandma’s house seeking shelter. He finds his grandma’s work with these homeless animals inspiring.
“She loves animals and taking care of them whenever she can,” he said. “It kind of just motivates you to do better and treat other beings better too.”
