Energy drinks are quite popular. They can give you a quick pick me up when you’re dragging through the day. But, new information about this trend should give people pause before taking a swig.

Frontiers in Public Health published a review of multiple papers on energy drinks. It highlights that the side effects of these drinks are much worse than previously believed.

In addition to higher blood pressure, sleeping problems, and weight gain, researchers are warning about diabetes, kidney damage and mental health issues from energy drinks. Tooth decay is an additional cause for concern. Most energy drinks contain about 54 grams of sugar. For comparison, men are encouraged by the American Heart Association not to consume more than 36 grams daily.

A South Carolina teenager died earlier this year after consuming a large Mountain Dew, a cafe latte, and an energy drink in two hours. It is believed the energy drink contributed to his death. The University of Maryland concluded that young adults who regularly consume these type of drinks are more likely to abuse prescription stimulants, cocaine, or drink heavily.

In addition to the sugars, the high levels of caffeine and additives like taurine cause trouble too. It is believed they can lead to anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts. Blood pressure may also increase and cardiovascular issues may arise.

Josiemer Mattei, an assistant professor of nutrition at Harvard is advising that people skip the energy drinks at least until more studies are completed. The risks are too great and do not seem to be worth the reward of a quick pick me up.

It is recommended a people drink extra water instead of grabbing an energy drink. Added hydration can help “keep the body running” without the sugar, caffeine, and other added ingredients that are in energy drinks.
