Egypt’s Great Pyramid of Giza is one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. Archaeologists have long wondered how Ancient Egyptians were able to transport 2.5-ton blocks for 500 miles to create the tomb of Pharaoh Khufu.
The pyramid stands 481 feet tall and was the tallest man-made structure on earth until the Middle Ages. A recent discovery of an ancient scroll, a boat, and a previously undiscovered system of waterways have shed some light on how this masterpiece was created thousands of years ago.
Thousands of workers transported 170,000 tons of limestone along the Nile River in wooden boats held together by ropes. They used specially created canals to carry the stone to a port just yards from where the pyramid now stands.
A scroll written by a man named Merer has finally given archaeologists a first-hand account of the construction. It describes how the stone was shipped from Tura to Giza 500 miles away.
A new documentary aired in Britain that detailed new discoveries about the construction of the pyramid, including a ceremonial boat. Wooden planks were restored and then scanned to see how they fit together. This ceremonial boat was crafted so Pharaoh Khufu could command it in the afterlife.
A trailer of this new documentary is below.
It is amazing that they were able to create this structure thousands of years ago and it is still standing today! A video below of the outside of the Great Pyramid gives you a feel for how large it is. It is simply incredible to think of the effort and brainpower that went into designing and building it without modern equipment.
