In her recent Rolling Stone cover story published Thursday, Lady Gaga opens up about some of her lowest moments.

In the story, Lady Gaga says she was on lithium while filming the 2018 hit movie, A Star is Born, and suffered a psychotic break.

Lithium is used to treat mania that is part of bipolar disorder, as well as to reduce the frequency and severity of manic episodes. The Poker Face singer has never publicly disclosed the diagnosis, though.

Shortly after Gaga finished filming the 2018 musical, she kicked off her Joanne World Tour. It ran from August 2017 to February 2018. Unfortunately, Gaga has admitted to suffering a psychotic break during that tour.

The pop star said that the crisis came after the film, which later earned her an Oscar win in the original song category for Shallow, and a best actress nomination.

“I did A Star Is Born on lithium. There was one day that my sister said to me, ‘I don’t see my sister anymore,'” she told the outlet. “And I canceled the tour. There was one day I went to the hospital for psychiatric care.”

The singer continued, saying, “I needed to take a break. I couldn’t do anything… I completely crashed. It was really scary. There was a time where I didn’t think I could get better.”

Thankfully, Gaga received the mental help that she needed. “I feel really lucky to be alive. I know that might sound dramatic, but we know how this can go.”

The Abracadabra singer now considers herself a “healthy, whole person” and attributes her transformation to her fiancé, Michael Polansky, for helping her achieve this. The two have been dating since 2020, and he asked the pop star to marry him in April last year.

“Being in love with someone that cares about the real me made a very big difference,” she shared. “What he saw was, this is somebody that feels very far away from what they’re supposed to be doing.”

“He wanted to take care of me. And I’ve never been loved that way,” Gaga added of her fiancé. “My life was serious to him. It was not a party. He helped me see that my life was precious

The pop star recently landed seven Grammy nominations from her latest project, Mayehm, including in the prestigious album of the year category. She also dived into her journey about rediscovering what she had lost and how to “get it back” in the Rolling Stone cover story.
