As the Whiskey River singer turned 93 at the end of April, a source has said the country singer veteran has kept on trucking as he “thinks he’ll die if he’s not performing and entertaining a crowd”;

According to RadarOnline.com, he has “held onto” the “dark fear,” and it is the one thing keeping him on the road despite his age.

An insider told the outlet despite his mind still being “sharp as a whistle”, his body has been showing clear signs of his age.

They said: “He’s frail, can’t stand straight and must perform sitting down. He even breathes with difficulty.”

Radar added, despite his apparent troubles, Willie dismissed advisors as “nags” for telling him to slow down – and declares he’s “not retiring.”

The source went on: “He needs his fans as much as they need him. His wife, Annie, and eight kids mean the world to him – but Willie’s first love was always his music. It keeps him going.”

Declining Health

Willie has previously spoken openly about his health, including lung issues linked to years of smoking.

In an interview with The Washington Post, he said: “I’ve smoked a lot of cigarettes, and I’ve had emphysema and pneumonia four or five times, so my lungs were really screwed up.”

He added, “I had heard that this stem cell operation would be good for them. So, I said, ‘Well, I’m gonna try it out’.”

In a later interview with KSAT, Nelson said he had stopped smoking cigarettes entirely.

He added, “I have abused my lungs quite a bit in the past, so breathing is a little more difficult these days. I have to be careful.”

Still Using Cannabis

Willie’s publicist, Elaine Schock, confirmed at the time that while he had quit nicotine, he continued to use cannabis, a long-associated element of his public persona.

However, Willie later indicated he had reduced this as well, telling Forbes: ‘My lungs have already said, ‘Don’t do that.’”

He added, “So, I don’t really do anything now much except a few edibles.”

The singer’s enduring presence on the road has been closely tied to his identity as a performer, with his live shows continuing to draw audiences across generations.

His career, which includes membership of the outlaw country movement and decades of touring, has made him one of the most recognizable figures in American music.
