Fans of the singer Beyoncé were furious on Monday when she was not nominated for a single Country Music Association Award (CMA Award). Now, the CMAs have found an unlikely defender in Whoopi Goldberg, who is speaking out to say that she doesn’t believe that Beyoncé was “snubbed.”
Goldberg Defends CMAs
Despite the success of Beyoncé’s first country music album Cowboy Carter, she was not nominated for a single CMA Award. This led to mass outrage among her fans, who are known as the Beyhive.
Goldberg, however, doesn’t understand what all the fuss is about. On Tuesday’s episode of her ABC talk show The View, she spoke out to defend the CMAs.
“A lot of people are surprised — I don’t know why — that it didn’t receive a single CMA Award nomination,” said Goldberg, 68. “Well, this is the question: Are you surprised?”
“I don’t think she was snubbed, I think they just didn’t… it wasn’t for them,” she added.
Goldberg’s co-host Sunny Hostin responded by expressing her disappointment that Beyoncé wasn’t nominated.
“I happen to love Dolly Parton, so I felt that when the Queen of Country sort of passed the baton a little bit for ‘Jolene,’ which was an incredible song on her album, and ‘Texas Hold ‘Em,’ two incredible country songs, I thought she would at least get nominated for those two,” Hostin said.
Meanwhile, co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin chimed in to talk about how successful Cowboy Carter was with fans, saying, “The Country Billboard charts do not lie.”
Goldberg, however, was still not having it. She also reminded her co-hosts that fans and voters sometimes simply don’t agree.

Goldberg Says ‘There Are No Snubs’
Goldberg has been outspoken about rejecting the notion of “snubs” at entertainment awards shows in the past. Back in January, Goldberg defended the Oscars after the Barbie director and star Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie were passed over for nominations.
“There are no snubs. That’s what you have to keep in mind: Not everybody gets a prize, and it is subjective. Movies are subjective,” Goldberg said at the time.
“The movies you love may not be loved by the people who are voting,” she continued.
Goldberg knows a thing or two about how awards shows work. Indeed, she is one of the few entertainers that can call herself an EGOT. That means that Goldberg has won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony.
Beyoncé Passed Over By The CMAs
Beyoncé’s lack of CMA nominations was a shock, given the success of Cowboy Carter. With this album, Beyoncé made history as the first black woman to ever reach No. 1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart. She also became the first black woman to hit the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Hot country songs chart with “Texas Hold ‘Em,” which held the top position for a surprising ten weeks.
Beyoncé had qualified for CMA categories like single of the year, song of the year, album of the year, female vocalist of the year, and music event of the year. She even qualified for entertainer of the year, but was not able to score a nomination in any category.
Beyoncé’s fans have been ruthlessly attacking the CMAs for days. However, Goldberg is right in pointing out that not everything is a purposeful snub.
After all, you win some, you lose some, and Beyoncé simply lost out with the CMAs. In the end, Beyoncé just didn’t get enough votes to score a nomination, and there’s nothing more to it than that.
Better luck next time, Beyoncé!
