Last week, we reported that Tim Allen had confirmed that Toy Story 5 has officially begun filming. Now, Allen’s co-star Tom Hanks has issued a cryptic message about the movie as he begins his first day of filming it.
Hanks’ Cryptic Toy Story 5 Post
Hanks, 68, took to Instagram on Tuesday to post a photo of his hand flashing the number five in a movie studio.
“First day of work on a certain Story Number 5! Need a hint? Disney. Studio B,” he captioned the photo.
Toy Story 5 is set to hit theaters on June 19, 2026. Hanks will be reprising his role of Woody. Allen, 71, will also be playing Buzz Lightyear once again.
This comes one week after Allen gave fans a teaser as to what the plot of Toy Story 5 will be.
“I can tell you that it’s a lot about Jessie,” Allen, 71, told WIVB. “Tom [Hanks] and I do — Woody and I — do realign.”
Jessie made her debut in Toy Story 2 back in 1999. She is voiced by the two-time Oscar nominee Joan Allen.
“And there’s an unbelievable opening scene with Buzz Lightyears,” Allen added. “I can give you that, but I can’t give you much more.”

Toy Story 5 Director Sounds Off
At Disney’s D23 expo in August of last year, director Andrew Stanton revealed that Toy Story 5 will focus on contemporary issues. He confirmed that one plotline will revolve around the impact of technology on childhood play.
“In Toy Story 5 the toys’ jobs get exponentially harder when our toy crew goes head to head with what kids are obsessed with today: electronics,” Stanton said.
Stanton proceeded to showcase a teaser trailer that featured Woody, Buzz and Jessie waving to viewers. They could then be seen looking on sadly as their owner was engrossed in a tablet.
Stanton, who has directed classic Pixar movies like Finding Nemo and A Bug’s Life, will be directing Toy Story 5 with McKenna Harris.
“YEEE-HAW! i’m co-directing toy story 5, and we’ve been having the best time with the best team ever! 🤠⭐️ ,” Harris wrote on Instagram in August of 2024. “so happy to be working with Andrew Stanton and my girl @jesschoismyth on this sweet, sweet movie!! 🥰.”

Toy Story 5 Will Be ‘Surprising’
Pete Docter, executive producer and one of the creators and writers behind the original 1995 Toy Story movie, told The Wrap in February of 2023 that the fifth installment will be “surprising.”
“The thing we’ve been really trying to do, and this has been the case for a while, is we’ve been looking at them a little bit like, ‘okay, we’re not planning for the future,'” Docter said at the time. “When we made the first Toy Story, we had no idea there would be a Toy Story 2. We’re just trying to make this movie. But that in making the movie, it takes you places, unexpected places, which is what I love about the creative process. If I knew exactly what I was doing when I started making a movie, there’d kind of be no point in making it. I discover so much along the way.”
“I think it’ll be surprising,” he teased of Toy Story 5. “It’s got some really cool stuff that you haven’t seen before.”
Toy Story is one of the most beloved movie franchises of all time. We can’t wait to see the fifth movie when it comes out in June of next year!
