Toy Story is one of the most popular animated franchises of all time. That’s why fans are already eagerly awaiting Toy Story 5, which is set to hit theaters on June 19, 2026.
Tim Allen Teases Toy Story 5
Production on Toy Story 5 has reportedly already begun. While he obviously can’t give away any spoilers, star Tim Allen, who plays Buzz Lightyear, has wet fans’ appetites in a new interview by giving them an idea of the general plot of this movie. He’s also teasing an “unbelievable opening scene” involving his iconic character that will likely need to be seen to be believed!
“I can tell you that it’s a lot about Jessie,” Allen, 71, told WIVB. “Tom [Hanks] and I do — Woody and I — do realign.”
“And there’s an unbelievable opening scene with Buzz Lightyears,” he added. “I can give you that, but I can’t give you much more.”
Wow, we certainly can’t wait to see that!
Watch Allen talk more about this in the video below.
Allen Returns To Buzz Lightyear Role
It’s been six years since Toy Story 4 came out. The movie was a massive hit, bringing in 1.07 billion globally. Back in December, Allen opened up about what it’s like to return to the character of Buzz Lightyear after so many years.
“I just did the first five-hour session for Buzz, probably a week ago,” Allen told Collider at the time. “It’s really, really weird to get back in it.”
“It’s a very, very clever story,” Allen added of the mysterious Toy Story 5 plot. “Had they not come up with a brilliant script, they wouldn’t have done it and they wouldn’t have called me and Tom [Hanks]. It’s really clever.”
Allen went on to talk about how “blessed” he is to have gotten to voice Buzz Lightyear ever since the first Toy Story movie came out back in 1995.
“I’m so blessed to be Buzz Lightyear, to be honest,” he gushed. “It’s gonna be fun. I think we’re a year out. I’ve gotten up to the third act. We’ll do the third act. And then, we’ll go back and clean it. And then, I’ll do it about five more times. It’s a really good story, guys. It’s really good.”

Allen’s Hit Sitcom
Aside from Toy Story 5, Allen is firmly focused on his new hit ABC sitcom Shifting Gears, which was recently renewed for a second season. This is Allen’s third hit sitcom. He previously starred as Tim “The Toolman” Taylor on Home Improvement from 1991 until 1999. Allen then portrayed to Mike Baxter on Last Man Standing from 2011 until 2021.
Now, Allen is playing Matt Parker on Shifting Gears. Unlike Allen’s previous two sitcom characters, Matt is a widower. On the show, Matt’s life is turned upside down when his estranged daughter and her two children move back in with him. While Shifting Gears is just as funny as Allen’s previous sitcoms, there’s an emotional undertone to it as well.
“This time the guy lost his wife, so he’s dealing with grief,” Allen explained in his latest interview. “Life is changing, where people that do stuff with their hands aren’t as appreciated as I wish they were.”
