Last month, we reported that the Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman and her country music star husband Keith Urban had separated after 19 years of marriage. At the time, insiders were claiming that Kidman was desperately “fighting to save her marriage.” They also alleged that she’d felt “blindsided” by Urban wanting to separate.
Hours later, however, Kidman, 58, officially filed for divorce from Urban, 58. This came amidst rumors that Urban had already moved on with a “new girlfriend.”
While this was Urban’s first and only marriage, Kidman was previously married to her fellow A-list Hollywood star Tom Cruise. Indeed, Kidman and Cruise were married from 1990 until they underwent a difficult divorce that was finalized in 2001. Now, Cruise has broken his silence about Kidman’s latest divorce through insiders close to him.
Cruise Believes ‘This Is Karma’
Cruise, 63, has reportedly told friends that he views Kidman’s split with Urban as “karma” for the way she treated him during their marriage.
“When Tom and Nicole split, he caught all the blame and she got all the sympathy. He was painted as the bad guy, that stuck with him for years,” a Cruise insider told International Business Times.
“Tom was really stung by the way Nicole handled their breakup,” the source continued. “She went on TV, made digs about his height, and painted herself as the victim, while he stayed silent and took the hits.”
The insider went on to say that Cruise feels like he was “proven right” now that Kidman has split from her second husband.
“It annoyed him when this guy was painted as this saintly figure who’d swooped in on a white horse, so to speak, and rescued Nicole from the hellish memory of their marriage,” the insider added.
“He’s following the divorce news closely, and a part of him feels badly for her, since he knows how much she’s hurting. At the same time, he’s also allowing himself a little pat on the back and telling people close to him that this is karma doing its thing,” the source concluded. “Bottom line: He thought they were a hyped up couple who clearly had very little in common from the get-go — now he’s been proved right.”

Kidman’s Past Jabs At Cruise
Kidman and Cruise met back in 1989 on the set of their movie Days Of Thunder. They married the next year and adopted two children before divorcing in 2001. Their divorce was highly publicized at the time, as it was extremely acrimonious.
Kidman was right in the middle of this bitter divorce when she appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman on August 2, 2001. Host David Letterman kicked off the interview by asking Kidman a blunt question about her split from Cruise.
“I heard you’re getting divorced. How’s that going?” Letterman asked the actress.
Letterman went on to say that the fact that Kidman was even on his show was an indication that things were “all right” with her. Kidman half-smiled as she replied by saying “I’d probably still be here” even if they weren’t.
Letterman proceeded to ask if people had been bringing up her Cruise breakup constantly.
“Um, yeah, I get a lot of questions,” Kidman admitted.
That’s when Kidman issued a six-word jab that had both the audience cheering and fans cracking up decades later.
“Well, I can wear heels now,” Kidman quipped with a mischievous grin on her face.
Letterman burst out laughing at this, and the audience erupted in applause.
“Let’s move on,” Kidman concluded. “Now we move on.”
Kidman’s comments were a clear reference to her and Cruise’s height disparity. Cruise is 5’7, while Kidman is 5’11.

Kidman ‘Didn’t Want’ To Divorce Urban
Kidman went on to marry Urban in 2006. They later had two daughters before secretly separating back in June, a move that was initiated by Urban. Kidman then spent the summer desperately trying to save her marriage. Once she finally realized it was over, Kidman filed for divorce on September 30, citing “irreconcilable differences” at the time.
“She didn’t want this,” a source told People Magazine after Kidman filed. “She has been fighting to save the marriage.”
Divorce is never easy, particularly after so many years together. While we can see why Cruise is seemingly taking joy in the downfall of this marriage, we are still praying for both Kidman and Urban as they navigate this difficult chapter of their lives.
