Tom Cruise may be in his 60s now, but that doesn’t mean he’s slowing down one bit when it comes to doing his own grueling stunts for his legendary action movies.

Most of the time things go smoothly. For his latest outing, though, Cruise ran into a bit of trouble.

Cruise Would ‘Pass Out’ Doing Stunts

Cruise, 62, recently completed filming on Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning, which is set to be released in May. In a new interview, Cruise is revealing that he would actually “pass out” while filming scenes for this film.

In one shocking scene, Cruise holds onto a 1930s biplane as it flies through the air. In true Cruise fashion, he filmed the scene himself instead of using a stunt double.

We mentioned he’s in his 60s, right?

“When you stick your face out, going over 120 to 130 miles an hour, you’re not getting oxygen,” Cruise told Empire of this scene. “So I had to train myself how to breathe. There were times I would pass out physically; I was unable to get back into the cockpit.”

Christopher McQuarrie, who wrote and directed the last three Mission Impossible movies as well as this one, spoke out to gush over Cruise for his brave stunt work.

“There are stunts in this movie that will melt your brain,” McQuarrie explained. “There would be a day in Africa – any day in Africa – where Tom would go out and do something that topped anything he had ever done before.”

McQuarrie also teased another dramatic moment in the new movie. Though he didn’t want to give anything away, he admitted, “I truly want to puke thinking about the stress. It was intense.”

Will This Be Cruise’s Last Mission Impossible Movie?

Cruise has been playing Ethan Hunt in the Mission Impossible movies since 1996. Rumors have been swirling that the upcoming eighth Mission Impossible movie will be Cruise’s last.

“Tom is keen to give Mission: Impossible a fresh take in the next two films and wants to explore a bit of Ethan’s past,” a source told The Sun back in December. “They’re going to start looking for a young star to take on the role and they will appear a bit in the next film and then more in the ninth.”

“It’s very important to Tom that they get the right person,” the insider continued. “They are seeking a youngster who is completely fresh on the scene and will cause a real stir. It’s a huge role but the hunt is on to see if they can find a young Tom Cruise.”

Good luck finding anyone as brave – or silly – as the great Tom Cruise!

Glen Powell Shoots Down Rumors

After this report came out, rumors began to swirl that Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick co-star Glen Powell, 36, would be taking on the Mission Impossible role. Powell, however, was quick to debunk these rumors.

“My mom would never let me do that,” Powell told Variety. He added that the stunt-filled Mission: Impossible franchise is the “worst gig in town, everybody knows that.”

“That’s a death trap,” he stated, referring to Cruise doing his own stunts.

And that attitude right there, folks, is why there is only one Tom Cruise.

God bless Cruise for continuing to show the world that age really is just a number. Be sure to check out his stunt work for yourself when Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning hits theaters on May 25!
