Last month, we reported that the Hollywood star Tim Allen was opening up about the upcoming Pixar movie Toy Story 5 as he began filming it. Indeed, he will be reprising his iconic role of Buzz Lightyear.

Now, Allen is further opening up about this highly anticipated new film.

Allen Discusses Toy Story 5

“I just finished another five-hour session in L.A. yesterday, flew here late last night. So, it’s a story about Jessie. It’s very, very clever,” Allen, 71, told Entertainment Tonight at the Disney Upfronts over the weekend.

“I was reticent, I’m with some people that are detractors — do we need another [one], because Toy Story 4, ‘to infinity and beyond,’ the hard line when Buzz and Woody had to say goodbye to each other, which tore us up,” Allen continued. “…But now we’re back for a good reason, and it is very, very clever. And it’s worth it.”

Fans will remember that Woody, who is voiced by Tom Hanks, gave his sheriff badge to Jessie, voiced by Joan Cusack, at the end of Toy Story 4. Because of this, it makes sense that the fifth film will be shifting to more of a focus on Jessie.

Allen Teases ‘Unbelievable Opening Scene’

This comes after Allen teased an “unbelievable opening scene” in Toy Story 5. It will reportedly involve his character of Buzz Lightyear.

“I can tell you that it’s a lot about Jessie,” Allen, 71, told WIVB. “Tom [Hanks] and I do — Woody and I — do realign.”

“And there’s an unbelievable opening scene with Buzz Lightyears,” he added. “I can give you that, but I can’t give you much more.”

Wow, we certainly can’t wait to see that!

Allen Feels ‘Blessed’ To Play Buzz Lightyear

It’s been six years since Toy Story 4 came out. The movie was a massive hit, bringing in 1.07 billion globally. Back in December, Allen opened up about what it’s like to return to the character of Buzz Lightyear after so many years.

“I just did the first five-hour session for Buzz, probably a week ago,” Allen told Collider at the time. “It’s really, really weird to get back in it.”

“It’s a very, very clever story,” Allen added of the mysterious Toy Story 5 plot. “Had they not come up with a brilliant script, they wouldn’t have done it and they wouldn’t have called me and Tom [Hanks]. It’s really clever.”

Allen went on to talk about how “blessed” he is to have gotten to voice Buzz Lightyear for decades in five different movies.

“I’m so blessed to be Buzz Lightyear, to be honest,” he gushed. “It’s gonna be fun. I think we’re a year out. I’ve gotten up to the third act. We’ll do the third act. And then, we’ll go back and clean it. And then, I’ll do it about five more times. It’s a really good story, guys. It’s really good.”

The original Toy Story movie came out back in 1995. Its sequels subsequently were released in 1999, 2010, and 2019, respectively. Toy Story is one of the most beloved film franchises of all time. That’s why fans are already eagerly anticipating the release of Toy Story 5 on June 19, 2026!
