Yesterday, we reported that CBS had canceled The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Many immediately claimed that this was due to political reasons, as host Stephen Colbert has been extremely critical of the current administration.

Now, however, the true reason behind this cancelation has been revealed. Much to the dismay of liberal elites everywhere, it has nothing to do with politics.

Colbert’s Show Loses Millions For CBS

CBS actually canceled The Late Show with Stephen Colbert because the network was losing between $40 million and $50 million a year on it. Insiders have spoken out to say that CBS executives finally pulled the plug out of frustration over Colbert continually facing a dire shortage of advertisers.

Colbert was technically number one in the ratings in his time slot. However, that isn’t saying much, given the small number of viewers who still regularly watch late night.

“Colbert gets no advertising and late night is a tough spot,” one source with direct knowledge of CBS’s decision told The New York Post. “Colbert might be No. 1, but who watches late night TV anymore?”

The insider went on to say that CBS is a “melting ice cube” with its losses and cost overruns. That’s why executives are launching a plan to enhance CBS Sports. They also are eager to invest in in “truth-based” news at a network that conservatives have long claimed has a strong liberal bias.

It seems that in alienating half of his audience whose political views don’t align with his own, Colbert caused his ratings to dip so much so that CBS could no longer keep his show on television from a financial perspective. Perhaps Colbert should have taken a page out of the playbooks of late night legends like Johnny Carson and Jay Leno, and kept politics out of his show!

Backstory: Here’s The Real Reason CBS Canceled ‘Late Show With Stephen Colbert’

CBS Cancels The Late Show

CBS announced on Thursday that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will be ending in May of 2026. Rather than replace Colbert, CBS is ending The Late Show franchise altogether. The network praised Colbert in a statement, saying that he is “irreplaceable.”

“We are proud that Stephen called CBS home,” CBS executives said. “He and the broadcast will be remembered in the pantheon of greats that graced late night television.”

“Our admiration, affection, and respect for the talents of Stephen Colbert and his incredible team made this agonizing decision even more difficult,” they concluded. “With much gratitude, we look forward to honoring Stephen and celebrating the show over the next 10 months alongside its millions of fans and viewers.”

Colbert Responds

Despite this, Colbert didn’t take the cancelation well. Indeed, he appeared visibly upset when he told viewers that his show had been canceled on Thursday night.

“It’s not just the end of our show, but it’s the end of The Late Show on CBS,” he said. “I’m not being replaced. This is all just going away. And I do want to say … that the folks at CBS have been great partners. I’m so grateful to the Tiffany Network for giving me this chair and this beautiful theater to call home. And of course I’m grateful to you, the audience, who have joined us every night.”

Colbert went on to thank the show’s band. He said that he’s “extraordinarily, deeply grateful to the 200 people who work here.”

“I’ve had the pleasure and the responsibility of sharing what we do every day with you in front of this camera for the last 10 years,” Colbert concluded. “It is a fantastic job. I wish somebody else was getting it. It’s a job that I’m looking forward to doing with this usual gang of idiots for another 10 months.”

Many feel that Colbert has gotten what he deserved after shamelessly politicizing The Late Show in the years since he took over for the legendary host David Letterman back in 2015. In the end, other late night hosts should take notice of what happened to Colbert, because it might soon be game over for them as well!
