Last week, we reported that CBS had canceled The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Many immediately claimed that this was due to political reasons, as host Stephen Colbert has been extremely critical of the current administration. However, it was quickly revealed that CBS was actually losing $40-50 million per year on Colbert’s show. This seemingly confirmed that CBS really did cancel the show for “financial reasons,” just as the network claimed.

Now, things have gotten even worse for Colbert. Much to the liberal Colbert’s humiliation, it might just be a Fox News host who replaces him as the star of late night.

Gutfeld! Dominates Late Night Ratings

The Fox News host Greg Gutfeld’s late night show Gutfeld! dominated late-night TV ratings in the second quarter of 2025.

Gutfeld managed to get an average of three million viewers, and he even scored big with a key demographic. Indeed, Gutfeld! was watched by 365,000 people aged between 25 and 54 in the second quarter of 2025.

Gutfeld! is structured like most other late night talk shows. It features a monologue, roundtable, recurring gags, and rotating co-hosts. However, unlike Colbert’s show, Gutfeld! is run by a creative team of around 20 people. This gives it a more authentic feel than other late night talk shows, attracting an audience that wants real talk rather than highly-scripted mainstream comedy.

Gutfeld Celebrates

Last week, Gutfeld celebrated after The Washington Examiner released a report comparing his ratings to Colbert’s. While Gutfeld averaged three million viewers, Colbert averaged just 1.9 million.

“We beat all these guys, my show, and we are only in 61 million homes. CBS reaches nearly 300 million Americans,” Gutfeld said.

“[Colbert] also had 200 staffers. I employ nothing but teenage runaways. And by the way, I don’t even pay them,” he added with a laugh.

Gutfeld went on to talk about CBS canceling The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Not only is CBS canceling it, they’re retiring the entire Late Night franchise.

“I love that they claim it’s a financial reason. Everything is a financial reason, right?” Gutfeld said. “They didn’t cancel his show, they canceled the whole show. This was an ‘institution,’ and they said rather than put somebody in his place, they just said we’re closing it up. Imagine being a chef, you’re such a bad chef that they canceled food.”

Gutfeld’s co-host Emily Compagno agreed, pointing out that “at the end of the day, the viewers were voting with the remote.”

Colbert Devastated By His Show’s Cancelation

As for Colbert, he’s been left devastated by the cancelation of his show.

“It’s not just the end of our show, but it’s the end of The Late Show on CBS,” he said. “I’m not being replaced. This is all just going away. And I do want to say … that the folks at CBS have been great partners. I’m so grateful to the Tiffany Network for giving me this chair and this beautiful theater to call home. And of course I’m grateful to you, the audience, who have joined us every night.”

Colbert went on to thank the show’s band. He said that he’s “extraordinarily, deeply grateful to the 200 people who work here.”

“I’ve had the pleasure and the responsibility of sharing what we do every day with you in front of this camera for the last 10 years,” Colbert concluded. “It is a fantastic job. I wish somebody else was getting it. It’s a job that I’m looking forward to doing with this usual gang of idiots for another 10 months.”

Many feel that Colbert has gotten what he deserved after shamelessly politicizing The Late Show in the years since he took over for the legendary host David Letterman back in 2015. After alienating half of his viewers over politics for years, it seems that this finally caught up to Colbert.

In the end, it’s not surprising that someone like Gutfeld might be the next star of late night. Colbert’s fellow liberal late night hosts may want to take notice, because their days on television might be numbered as well!
