Last week, we reported that CBS had canceled The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. On Monday night’s episode of this program, host Stephen Colbert came completely unglued as he declared himself a “martyr” while firing back at the cancelation.

Colbert Unravels After Late Show Cancelation

Colbert, 61, kicked off his monologue last night by saying that “cancel culture has gone too far,” adding that now that he has nothing to lose, he can say whatever he wants.

“They made one mistake, they left me alive! For the next ten months, the gloves are off!” Colbert said of Paramount, which is the parent company of CBS. This was a reference to the fact that executives are giving Colbert one more season, meaning The Late Show won’t actually end until May of 2026.

Colbert then shifted to attacking President Donald Trump, which is a favorite pastime of his. Trump had wasted no time in gloating over Colbert’s firing. Needless to say, this didn’t sit well with Colbert.

“How dare you, sir?” Colbert exclaimed. “Would an untalented man be able to compose the following satirical witticism? Go [expletive] yourself.”

Way to keep it classy, Stephen!

Backstory: Here’s The Real Reason CBS Canceled ‘Late Show With Stephen Colbert’

Colbert Attacks Trump

Colbert went on to reference Trump’s specific Truth Social post about his firing.

“I absolutely love that Colbert got fired. His talent was even less than his ratings,” Trump wrote. “I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next. Has even less talent than Colbert!”

Colbert responded to this by saying, “Nope, no, no. Absolutely not. Kimmel, I am the martyr. There’s only room for one on this cross. And the view is fantastic from up here. I can see your house!”

Colbert proceeded to say that now that he’s been fired, he’s free to admit what he truly feels about Trump.

“I don’t care for him,” Colbert said. “Doesn’t seem to have the skill set to be president. Just not a good fit, that’s all.”

Colbert also addressed his bosses at CBS, saying that they “have always been great partners.” However, he took issue with network executives claiming that they’d canceled his show for “financial reasons.”

“How could it be a purely financial decision if The Late Show’s is number one in ratings?” Colbert lamented. “A lot of folks are asking that question, mainly my staff’s parents and spouses.”

CBS Losing $40-50 Million On Colbert’s Show

Colbert’s show may be number one in the ratings in its time slot, but that’s not saying much, given the current state of late night. In fact, after the cancelation, it was revealed that CBS loses $40-50 million a year on The Late Show.

“Colbert gets no advertising and late night is a tough spot,” one source with direct knowledge of CBS’s decision told The New York Post. “Colbert might be No. 1, but who watches late night TV anymore?”

The insider went on to say that CBS is a “melting ice cube” with its losses and cost overruns. That’s why executives are launching a plan to enhance CBS Sports. They also are eager to invest in in “truth-based” news at a network that conservatives have long claimed has a strong liberal bias.

Colbert Only Has Himself To Blame

It seems that Colbert can’t accept the fact that he only has himself to blame for his show’s cancelation. Indeed, Colbert has shamelessly politicized The Late Show ever since he took over for the legendary David Letterman back in 2015. Prior to that, late night was something that all Americans could enjoy together, regardless of their political opinions.

That all changed when Colbert took over as host. Over the course of the past decade, Colbert has turned The Late Show from being a comedy show to being a liberal propaganda machine. This alienated half of his audience whose political views don’t align with his own. With fewer people watching late night than ever these days, these were numbers that Colbert simply couldn’t afford to lose.

No wonder CBS finally decided that they could no longer afford to lose $40-50 million a year on Colbert’s unfunny late night show. Colbert can blame Trump all that he wants to, but if he really wants to see who’s to blame for his late night cancelation, he should just look in the mirror!
