The singer Ryan Whyte Maloney, who was best known for competing on The Voice back in 2014, passed away in the early hours of Tuesday morning. He was only 44 years-old.

Whyte Maloney’s Death

Whyte Maloney’s death was confirmed to People Magazine by The Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner in Las Vegas. His official cause of death was determined to be suicide, and he was declared dead at 2:50am on Tuesday.

On Monday night, Maloney had taken to his Instagram Story to post a video of himself in what looks to be a bar.

“Nine fine Irishmen for a private party tonight, and we will be rocking,” he said in the video as he made a rock hand gesture.

It’s unclear at this time what happened between then and his death by his own hand.

Whyte Maloney’s History

Born in Traverse City, Michigan in 1981, Whyte Maloney fell in love with music at an early age. Indeed, he grew up playing the guitar, violin, cello, and drums.

In the early 2000s, Whyte Maloney became the frontman for the prog-rock band Indulge. In 2005, he recorded the album Tomorrow’s Another Day with this band. Maloney spent the next ten years touring with Indulge before breaking out on his own and launching a solo career.

Whyte Maloney later released his debut solo album Where I’ve Been. His original songs “Hillbilly,” “Michigan Moonlight” and “Living with No Directions” also became hits on country radio in Michigan, Nevada, Colorado, and California.

Whyte Maloney’s bigest break came when he competed on The Voice in 2014. There, he received a four-chair turn when he performed “Lights” by Journey in a blind audition. At the time, the four judges on The Voice were Shakira, Usher, Blake Shelton, and Adam Levine.

Whyte Maloney ultimately chose Shelton as his coach. He went on to survive two Battle rounds, and he ended the season as one of Shelton’s top five finalists.

During his time on The Voice, Whyte Maloney recorded four singles: “Lights,” Tina Turner’s “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” “Easy” by Rascal Flatts, and “Second Chance” by Shinedown. After being eliminated, Whyte Maloney returned to perform on the season finale of the NBC reality singing competition.

Whyte Maloney’s Post-The Voice Life

Over the years, Whyte Maloney stayed connected with Shelton. In 2024, Whyte Maloney performed multiple times at Shelton’s venue Ole Red, where he had a residency that was ongoing.

Whyte Maloney had a successful performing career that saw him share the stage with the likes of Tim McGraw, Morgan Wallen, Rascal Flatts, Shakira, Usher, Ed Sheeran, and more.

Whyte Maloney’s website states that he “looks bright into the future and moves to continued success as a stapled figure in the Las Vegas music scene, performing at corporate events and in showrooms.”

“Ryan dreams big and pushes on towards the lights of the stage with a charismatic motto, ‘Only Those Who See The Invisible, Accomplish The Impossible,'” his bio continues.
