Rebel Wilson isn’t just the “token funny girl” anymore. With her weight loss, Wilson has expanded her repertoire into more serious films, including Lady Capulet in Juliet & Romeo.
In a recent interview with the NY Post, Wilson commented that, “When I lost weight in 2020, that weirdly made me more versatile as an actress, even though I had the same skills.”

2020 Weight Loss
When discussing her novel Rebel Rising: A Memoir, Wilson revealed she had lost around 80 pounds in 2020, dubbing it her “year of health” challenge.
Best known for her character “Fat Amy” in the Pitch Perfect series, some were concerned about her losing weight. Wilson said, “Basically, no one apart from my mom wanted me to lose weight,” and that “People thought I’d lose my pigeonhole in my career, playing the fat funny character, and they wanted me to continue in that.”
Instead of listening to others, Wison took it upon herself to lose the weight, using Ozempic to aid with the weight loss. She no longer takes the drug.
New Roles
With a new image, Rebel Wilson stepped back into the world of Hollywood, landing roles she would have never been approached about before 2020. These roles include Lady Capulet in the newest reimagining of the famous Shakespeare story, this time as a movie musical titled Juliet & Romeo, and a role in British indie film The Almond and the Seahorse.
For the Juliet & Romeo film, Wilson joins Jason Isaacs (Lord Montague), Clara Rugaard (Juliet), Jamie Ward (Romeo), and Sir Derek Jacobii (The Friar).

The Impact of a Child
Losing weight wasn’t the only factor in Wilson picking up the more serious role of Lady Capulet. Wilson didn’t think she would take the role if she hadn’t become a mother. Using surrogacy, Wilson welcomed daughter Royce into the world in 2022, and two years later, tied the knot with her girlfriend Ramona Agruma in September.
Lady Capulet is an iconic mother in film history, and Wilson wanted to embrace this, while also trying to give her “a little bit more empathy.” In reflecting on the importance of being a mother and the changes that go with it, Wilson said this.
“I don’t put myself first. By being an actor, being a performer, as part of your job, you’re a bit self-absorbed. You just have to go the opposite once you have a child. … I’ve got to be always thinking about my daughter and what’s good for her. And I think that’s changed me in a really positive way.”
Moving Forward

While Wilson is embracing her smaller form, she still comments about being confident in any body type.
In an interview with People, Wilson comments, “I think to many people I’m a beacon of body positivity because I see people who are considered medically obese … but I think they are absolutely beautiful. I really think beauty is at any shape and size, so I do really promote that.”
She also doesn’t hide her process of healing from shameful eating habits, such as emotional eating. Wilson promotes body positivity but not her behaviors, which she has been able to learn from on her weight-loss journey.
