Prince William‘s children have named a kangaroo at Australia Zoo “Cwtch.” The name is Welsh for “cuddle.”

The Announcement

Robert Irwin, son of the late conservationist Steve Irwin, has revealed the exciting news. Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, eight, were behind the cute moniker. Cwtch is the newest addition to the wildlife park in Queensland.

Robert – who helps manage the site – captioned an Instagram video with the kangaroo. “Introducing Cwtch, the newest member of the Australia Zoo family, a gorgeous eastern gray kangaroo joey.”

“Cwtch, which means ‘cuddle’ in Welsh, was named by Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.”

“Look out for Cwtch on your next visit to @australiazoo, and support their vital conservation efforts to protect Australia’s wildlife and wild places.”

Irwin’s Thoughts

The 22-year-old wildlife conservationist also talked about the new joey in the clip. “I’m very proud to announce that my friends, the Wales family, helped us to name our beautiful new joey.”

“Our new joey’s name is Cwtch, which is Welsh for ‘cuddle’, the absolute perfect name for a joey kangaroo ’cause at this age, they love a cuddle, and they spend most of their time inside that pouch with their mom.”

Robert then gave a special mention to the royal children.

He continued, “I want to say a particular thank you to Prince George, Prince Louis, and Princess Charlotte for your help in finding this little one a brilliant name.”

And he thanked the Wales family for their wildlife conservation efforts.

Robert added, “It is so important that we conserve all of our animals, including the icons, the kangaroos. These guys play a very important role in the Australian bush, and out there in the ecosystem, they are just crucial.”

With all of the animals that we support and all of the wildlife conservation efforts that we have around the world, it’s all about making sure we give back to the wildlife, and the wild places where they live.”

The zookeeper concluded, “So, Cwtch is now proudly part of our family here, at Australia Zoo.”

His mom, Terri Irwin, 61, commented that it was such a “special” moment.
