Drew Carey, the host of The Price Is Right, is opening up in a new interview about why he has avoided dating since the murder of his former fiancée, the Hollywood therapist Dr. Amie Harwick.

Carey Recalls Harwick’s Murder

Harwick was murdered by a bitter ex-boyfriend in February of 2020 when she was just 38. Though she and Carey had broken up before her death, they remained on good terms. Her senseless murder left Carey “devastated,” and he still feels “damaged” by it to this day.

“I think about her every day. It’s such a loss,” Carey, 66, told US Weekly. “Her death still affects me and my ideas about relationships and intimacy.”

“It was all damaged by first our breakup, and then, the day before she died, when she texted me,” he continued. “It had been a really bad breakup for both of us, but a necessary one. I couldn’t think about her or see a picture of her. I didn’t want to be reminded.”

Carey went on to recall that Harwick had sent him a text the day before she died, much to his surprise. The topic of conversation was certainly foreshadowing, unfortunately.

“She said, ‘Hey, it’s Amie. I’ve been thinking a lot about forgiveness. I would love to get together with you and talk about some things,'” he remembered. “I texted her that I loved her and that I’d see her the next week.”

Carey then said that he “heard from one of her friends that she shed tears about my saying that I loved her still, which I did. I loved her madly even though we were broken up.”

“The next day she was murdered, and we never got a chance to get together,” he lamented.

Carey Hasn’t Been Able To Date

Carey has been left so shattered by Harwick’s murder that he hasn’t been able to date in the five years since her death.

“It destroyed me for a while. I still don’t date….I have women I go out with and spend time with, but it’s all platonic,” he admitted. “I don’t care about anything else. Amie’s death really affected everything.”

Harwick was killed in the early hours of February 15, 2020, just after Valentine’s Day. She was found barely alive after being thrown from the balcony of her Hollywood Hills apartment. Sadly, Harwick quickly succumbed to her injuries.

Gareth Pursehouse, Harwick’s former boyfriend, was quickly arrested. He was convicted of her murder in September of 2023 and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. After Pursehouse’s sentencing, Carey spoke out to say that he could finally “let out a breath.”

Carey Eager To ‘Finally Move On’

“I can barely remember the guy’s name — that’s how much I’ve put him out of my life — but ever since the final sentencing, it feels like we’ve all let out a breath and are able to finally move on,” Carey told People Magazine last year.

“The whole process is over now, and there’s nothing else to be done and nothing else to worry about,” he added. “Speaking just for myself, it’s been quite a load off.”

Carey and Harwick became engaged back in 2018. Though they never ended up marrying, he still loves her to this day, even keeping photos of her around his home.

“She’s with me always,” Carey concluded.

Dealing with the death of a loved one is never easy, particularly when they’re lost to an act of violence. Please join us in saying a prayer for Carey as he continues to recover from Harwick’s death!
