The Oscar-winning Hollywood star Nicolas Cage is starring in a new horror movie about the childhood of Jesus Christ himself.
The Carpenter’s Son
Cage, 61, is starring as Joseph in the horror film The Carpenter’s Son, which hits theaters next month. Mary will be played by the British singer and songwriter FKA Twigs, 37. Meanwhile, the role of young Jesus will be played by the British actor Noah Jupe, 20.
Magnolia Pictures issued a statement saying that this movie takes place in “a remote village in Roman-era Egypt.” The village then “explodes into spiritual warfare when a carpenter, his wife and their child are targeted by supernatural forces in The Carpenter’s Son.”
“Joseph (Nicolas Cage), Mary (FKA twigs) and their teenage son Jesus (Noah Jupe) have lived for years under threat, clinging to their faith and traditions,” the synopsis continued. “But a stopover in a small settlement unleashes growing chaos when a mysterious stranger (Isla Johnston) tries to entice young Jesus to abandon his devout father’s rules.”
“With every pull of temptation, the boy is lured into a forbidden world, as a terrified Joseph realizes that a demonic power is at work,” Magnolia Pictures added. “Violent, unnatural events inexplicably follow Jesus, and he begins to experience nightmarish visions of the future. Finally, he learns the fearsome truth about his new playmate, as well as the child’s real name: Satan.”
The movie was written and directed by Lotfy Nathan. Check out the first trailer for The Carpenter’s Son in the video below.
Social Media Users Respond
Unfortunately for Cage and everyone else involved with The Carpenter’s Son, however, social media users have made it clear that they already aren’t fans of this movie.
“Can we genuinely not do this,” one social media user commented. Another added, “Wth seriously, no. nobody asked for this.”
“Why would Jesus’ childhood be dark?” a third user questioned. A fourth wrote, “Still wondering why this has to be horror man.”
Yet another social media user commented, “Another film I won’t both[er] with, why does Cage get involved with garbage such as this??”
However, some people still expressed some cautious excitement about the film.
“That’s either going to be cinema history… or the wildest fever dream ever put on screen,” one fan commented. “Either way, I’m watching lmfao.”
“Nicolas Cage in a biblical horror movie? That’s a combo I didn’t know I needed,” someone else wrote. A third social media user stated, “Nicholas Cage as Jesus’ stepdad is not on my 2025 bingo card.”
Cage’s Passion For Horror
Cage, who has an impressive 125 film and television credits to his name, has been focusing on horror movies in recent years. His most recent foray into this genre came in the 2024 horror thriller Longlegs, in which he played a serial killer.
“I have always maintained that horror, when done well, is genuinely surreal. It’s dream logic. It doesn’t have to rely on physics or reality,” Cage told the Associated Press last year.
“It can allow actors to express themselves in other ways besides that which is considered the arbiter of great acting, which is 1970s naturalism,” he added at the time.
Horror as a genre is all well and good. However, many would argue that turning the biblical story of Jesus into a horror movie might just be a step too far.
The Carpenter’s Son is set to hit theaters on November 14. It will certainly be interesting to see how this biblical horror movie does at the box office!
