Over the past few months, rumors have been swirling that Barack and Michelle Obama are heading for divorce. These claims allege that Barack and Michelle have been living “separate lives” for quite some time.
These rumors escalated in a big way back in January, when Michelle skipped both the funeral of Jimmy Carter and the inauguration of Donald Trump. This forced Barack to attend these major events alone. Indeed, Michelle was the only living former First Lady to not attend them.
Michelle Sounds Off
On the latest episode of her IMO podcast, which she hosts with her older brother Craig Robinson, Michelle is revealing her true thoughts about these divorce rumors. She claims to have been shocked that specifically skipping Trump’s inauguration led to negative speculation about the state of her marriage.
“My decision to skip the inauguration… or my decision to make choices at the beginning of this year that suited me were met with such ridicule and criticism,” Michelle said.
“People couldn’t believe that I was saying no for any other reason, that they had to assume that my marriage was falling apart, you know?” she continued.
Michelle went on to encourage other women to “practice… the art of saying no.” She described this as being a “muscle [she is] just now starting to build.”
“After all that I’ve done in this world, if… I still have to show people that I love my country, that I’m doing the right thing… all I’m doing is keeping that crazy bar that our mothers and grandmothers set for us,” Michelle added.
Michelle made similar comments about this during a recent appearance on Sophia Bush’s Work in Progress podcast.
“That’s the thing that we as women, I think we struggle with disappointing people,” Michelle explained. “So much so that this year people were, you know, they couldn’t even fathom that I was making a choice for myself that they had to assume that my husband and I are divorcing.”
“That this couldn’t be a grown woman just making a set of decisions for herself, right?” she lamented.

Obama Divorce Rumors
Michelle can try to shoot down these divorce rumors all that she wants to. However, that hasn’t stopped them from spreading like wildfire.
“I have been hearing this rumor that the Obamas are getting a divorce by reputable people,” political commentator Meghan McCain said on reporter Tara Palmeri’s podcast in January. “I’m not talking about TMZ, I’m not talking about Perez Hilton, although I love him, he’s my friend.”
“I’m talking about like very serious journalists telling me that they’re hearing that the Obama divorce rumors are true,” she added.
“We’ve heard that for a long time,” replied Tara, who has long covered Washington politics. “Like I just heard that they live separate lives.”
Listen to Meghan and Tara talk more about this in the clip below.
Obama Date Night
Last weekend, Barack and Michelle seemingly tried to put the divorce rumors to rest. They did so by ensuring that they were seen together on a date night in Washington D.C. This was the first time that they had been seen in public together in over five months.

That’s all well and good, but the Obamas might want to go a little further than that if they’re really want to destroy these divorce rumors once and for all. In the end, it seems that many in the public simply aren’t buying that Barack and Michelle are still in a loving marriage. Only time will tell if they really divorce!
