Mel Gibson has finally given fans an update on the long anticipated sequel to The Passion Of The Christ.

Gibson To Film Passion Of The Christ Sequel In 2026

While appearing on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Gibson confirmed that he plans to begin filming the sequel to his 2004 hit The Passion Of The Christ next year.

“I’m hoping next year sometime. There’s a lot required because it is— I’ll just tell you this, it’s an acid trip,” Gibson, 69, said of the film. He went on to reveal that the title of the sequel will be The Resurrection of the Christ.

“When we wrote it— I’ve never read anything like it,” he continued. “My brother [Donal Gibson] and I and [screenwriter Randall Wallace] all sort of congregated on this, so there’s some good heads put together, but there’s some crazy stuff.”

Gibson went on to say that he plans to have Jim Caviezel, 56, reprise his role of Jesus Christ for the sequel.

“So that’s the title and, yeah, it’s very ambitious, that’s all I’ll say,” Gibson explained. “It took a long time to write. It’s really ambitious and it goes from the fall of the angels to the death of the last apostle.”

“I don’t have a start date, I just have to begin pre-production and see what happens, and it’s just gonna roll in its own time,” he added. “It’s taking its own time. I thought it was late. I thought I was taking too long, but it’s probably just right. It’s when it’s supposed to be.”

The original Passion of the Christ was the fifth-highest-grossing movie of 2004 worldwide. It received Oscar nominations for Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, and Best Makeup.

Gibson Has Been Working On This Sequel For Years

This sequel has been in the works for years. Indeed, back in 2016, Gibson said that he was taking his time with it.

“We’re talking about that,” Gibson told CP Entertainment at the time. “Of course, that is a huge undertaking. And you know, it’s not The Passion 2. It’s called The Resurrection. Of course, that’s a very big subject, and it needs to be looked at because we don’t want to just do a simple rendering of it — you know, read what happened.”

“But in order to read it, experience, and explore probably deeper meanings of what it’s about, it’s going to take some doing, and Randall Wallace is up to the task,” he continued.

Wallace is the returning screenwriter of the original Passion Of The Christ film. He was previously nominated for an Oscar for Gibson’s 1995 movie Braveheart.

“The evangelical community considers The Passion the biggest movie ever out of Hollywood, and they kept telling us that they think a sequel will be even bigger,” Wallace told The Hollywood Reporter back in 2016.

“I always wanted to tell this story,” he continued. “The Passion is the beginning, and there’s a lot more story to tell.”

‘It’s A Difficult Concept’

In 2022, Gibson opened up about how complex the second movie will be.

“It’s not a linear narrative…you have to juxtapose the central event that I’m trying to tell with everything else around it in the future, in the past and in other realms,” he said. “It’s a difficult concept, and it has taken me a long time to focus and find a way to tell that story.”

Many have long felt that the original The Passion Of The Christ film is one of the best movies of all time. We can’t wait to see the sequel when it finally comes out!
