Last month, we reported that a sequel of Mel Gibson’s 2004 hit The Passion Of The Christ was set to begin filming in 2025. That may no longer be the case.
Mel Gibson has revealed that production could be delayed so that he can direct Lethal Weapon 5.
Gibson Sounds Off
Gibson, 68, revealed in a new interview that he’s not sure which of these two movies he will direct first.
“I don’t know, and that’s the funny thing, I mean, there’s various obstacles to getting any film up on its feet, and not just budgetary, but there’s like, there’s 1,000,001 reason why something goes and why it doesn’t,” Gibson told ComicBook. “So it’s really kind of a crapshoot at this point. You know, what goes first and which came first, whether it’s the chicken or the egg.”
Gibson revealed back in 2021 that he was planning to direct a fifth movie in the Lethal Weapon franchise. He had pledged to step in for famed Superman director Richard Donner, who died in 2021. At the time of his passing, Donner was working on a possible sequel.
“Richard Donner, who did the other four, sadly passed away, and he was a good friend. He kind of tasked me with carrying the flag home on this one so it’ll be an honor for me to do that,” Gibson said back in June. “He had gone a fair way with the screenplay, so we’ve used what was there and we kept poking at it. I’m pretty happy with it.”
Gibson went on to say that the fifth installment of Lethal Weapon would tackle “a couple of hard issues.” However, he made sure to add that it will also be funny.

The Passion Of The Christ 2
This comes after it was reported that a sequel for The Passion Of The Christ was finally set to begin filming in 2025.
Gibson is set to direct the film. Jim Caviezel will be reprising his iconic role of Jesus Christ. Francesco De Vito, who played Peter in the original film, will be returning to that role as well. Last month, Gibson was reportedly in Malta with his production team scouting out potential filming locations. Israel and Morocco are also being looked at as places where the sequel can be filmed.
The original The Passion Of The Christ movie made over $600 million at the box office. It also garnered three Oscar nominations. In the twenty years since then, Gibson has frequently expressed his desire to make a second movie so that he can continue telling the story of Jesus. This sequel has been in the works for may years.

The Resurrection
“We’re talking about that,” Gibson told CP Entertainment of the sequel back in 2016. “Of course, that is a huge undertaking. And you know, it’s not The Passion 2. It’s called The Resurrection. Of course, that’s a very big subject, and it needs to be looked at because we don’t want to just do a simple rendering of it — you know, read what happened.”
“But in order to read it, experience, and explore probably deeper meanings of what it’s about, it’s going to take some doing, and Randall Wallace is up to the task,” Gibson continued.
It will certainly be interesting to see if Lethal Weapon 5 or Passion Of The Christ 2 ends up being made first!
