Last week, we reported that Meghan Markle’s new Netflix show, With Love, Meghan, had somehow been given a second season. This came as a shock, however, as it’s being widely panned by fans and critics alike.
Many assumed that a second season meant that Meghan’s $100 million contract with Netflix had been renewed. However, it appears that this is actually not the case at all.
Meghan’s Netflix Contract Has Yet To Be Renewed
“It’s not a runaway success,” a Netflix insider told Daily Mail of the new show.
Last week, Meghan was quick to celebrate her show being given a second season on Netflix. Yet the insider explained that a second season doesn’t mean anything when it comes to Meghan’s contract. Instead, Netflix simply films most of their shows “back-to-back,” meaning that Meghan likely always had a second season in the can from the very beginning. A $100 million contract renewal, however, is still very much up in the air.
“I know they filmed the shows back-to-back so in theory there is no second season it’s like with lots of Netflix shows it is already in the bag at the same time as the first one,” the source said. “What this does is allow edits to be made to the show from feedback from press and Netflix viewers. It’s clever and cost effective. So no the overall contract hasn’t been renewed yet.”
Netflix Bosses ‘Worried’ About Negative Reviews
The insider went on to claim that Netflix bosses are “worried” about the tons of negative reviews that have poured in for With Love, Meghan in the six days since it came out.
“The industry bibles like The Hollywood Reporter and Variety are not keen on it,” the source concluded. “Netflix bosses are all worried now because they have invested a lot in the product line. They don’t know when and how to roll it all out.”
This comes as critics slammed With Love, Meghan as being “gormless lifestyle filler” with a “tangible desperation.” Making matters worse, multiple publications that are typically positive towards Meghan torched her new show as well.
Variety blasted With Love, Meghan as being a “Montecito ego trip not worth taking” in a review that held nothing back.
“The show plays out like a forced march, one in which Meghan’s guests must, as the price of getting to share an afternoon in a made-for-TV kitchen with her, praise her first,” Variety stated. “With Love, Meghan is made with a great deal of love – in the sense that the greatest love of all is the one that a person has for herself.”
Viewers agree with the critics on this one. Indeed, With Love, Meghan has an embarrassingly low 11 per cent rating out of over 250 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
“This isn’t even a fun hate watch. It’s just bad,” one viewer wrote. Another added that watching With Love, Meghan was the ‘worst few minutes of my life.”
Ouch, that has got to hurt for Meghan! No wonder Netflix bosses are starting to have reservations about continuing to hitch their wagon to the wife of Prince Harry.

Meghan Needs A Win For Netflix
Despite securing this $100 million Netflix deal, Meghan and Harry have yet to score a true hit with the streaming service, aside from their initial docuseries that they used to bash the royal family. Since then, their docuseries Polo, which tells the story of the ritzy sport, has flopped.
“Most unfortunately, just like Harry’s Netflix flop ‘Polo’, amongst the plethora of reasons why ratings are so low and critics have savaged [Markle]’s is due to lack of authenticity, being a tone-deaf portrayal of privileged self-important people,” royal expert Hilary Fordwich told Fox News. “Neither Netflix show has resonated with audiences. Both have been universally derided,”
This meant that the stakes for With Love, Meghan could not have been higher, as Meghan needed a bonafide hit. In the end, second season or not, Meghan might want to prepare herself for her $100 million contract not to be renewed by Netflix. The entertainment world is a numbers game, and Netflix can only afford to lose so much money on Meghan!
