In the years since they stepped down as senior royals back in 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been allowed to keep their official “HRH” titles. According to palace insiders, however, that may change as soon as Prince William becomes King.
Will Meghan And Harry Lose Their HRH Titles?
Meghan and Harry lost various royal privileges after they stepped down as working royals. This includes their taxpayer-funded security. However, they were never formally stripped of their “His/Her Royal Highness” titles.
Sources are now claiming to The Daily Beast that William may reevaluate that when he becomes King. Indeed, he’s known to be bitterly estranged from his brother and sister-in-law.
“It’s no secret William wants Harry more harshly dealt with,” said one palace insider. “He thinks he has betrayed the family from top to bottom, which is the ultimate Windsor crime. It wouldn’t take much to provoke him to flex his muscles when he is king.”

Meghan And Harry Test The Waters
Meghan and Harry had agreed not to use their HRH titles after they stepped down as senior royals. However, they have tested the waters by using the titles anyway on various occasions in the five years since then. Meghan recently raised eyebrows when she took to her Instagram Story to repost a message from a top Ukraine official addressing her as “Your Royal Highness.”
“It’s outrageous. Every time you think they can’t make it worse, they make it worse,” one palace insider fired back in response. “The deal with the HRH was a way to stop them cashing in while letting them walk away with pride and dignity and trust, and now Markle is using her HRH on a website which seems to exist to sell jam.”
Even so, another palace source spoke out to say that it’s unlikely that King Charles will take action in response to Meghan’s Instagram post.
“Charles isn’t going to open a new front in the civil war on the basis of one Instagram post, and it’s not as if they are calling themselves HRH,” this source alleged. “I think everyone is pretty clear, at this stage, what the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s position in the family is.”

Will Charles Take Action?
Yet another palace insider chimed in to add, “William has been given a great deal of influence on all areas of royal policy.” However, according to the source, “that cuts both ways and he respects his father’s rank.”
“Charles has a softly-softly attitude to Harry and Meghan, and so that’s the policy for now, but the gloves will be off when he inherits the throne,” that source continued. “If they started using the HRH titles on a regular basis, he would take them away for good.”
Over the past five years, the British government has been called upon by many to step in and strip Meghan and Harry of their HRH titles once and for all. Parliamentary bills have even been drawn up regarding this. However, none have gone far enough to result in the action occurring.
Charles, 76, has been battling an unspecified form of cancer for over a year. This has led some to speculate that William, 42, could potentially find himself on the throne sooner than he expected.
Once William does eventually become King, Meghan and Harry might want to start bracing themselves for the worst. Meghan and Harry have put the royals through quite a lot over the years. That’s why it won’t be surprising if William finally strips them of their HRH titles once and for all.
