Matthew McConaughey’s mother Kay celebrated her 93rd birthday last month, and she wants to share her secrets to longevity and staying healthy.

Kay’s Secret To Longevity

“The biggest thing for me is I don’t stress,” Kay told Austin Lifestyle. “Like, if you and I were really good friends and, and you were talking to me and you had a situation, I would listen to you and I would give you advice and if you didn’t take it, then that’s it, I wouldn’t stress over it.”

Kay went on to say that her trick is understanding that she doesn’t “have to fix everything.”

“For me, that’s very positive,” she said. “Women think they always have to fix everything, and I don’t think that way. I will help you, but I’m not going to stress over fixing everything.”

No doubt many of us could take that advice to heart! But what’s more, is Kay says you can avoid these situations in the first place.

When asked how she handles stressful situations, Kay replied, “I don’t let myself get [into] them, trust me, I don’t. If I see that’s where I’m headed, I back off. I’m not going to let people do that to me.”

Kay has also become passionate about pilates over the past few years. Indeed, she has been doing pilates virtually with her trainer Nonna Gleyzer since 2020. Nonna admitted that at first, she was wary about training Kay due to her advanced age. These days, however, Nonna said that Kay is “kicking my butt, and I’m a former gymnast from the Ukraine.”

“She’s made so much progress and challenges me more than I’m challenging her,” Nonna explained. “Her abs are like a rock. Each session, we do 80-100 different ab exercises. Young people can’t handle it.”

Kay’s Diet

As for her diet, Kay has some sage advice on dietary restrictions.

“We never have any sweets in our house, ever,” she stated.

Kay’s only indulgence is wine. Her favorite type of wine is from the brand Kendall Jackson.

“I have a glass at 5 o’clock and then I have a glass when I go to bed,” Kay confessed.

Kay typically eats seafood and chicken. She only has red meat when she visits Matthew, his wife Camila, and their three children.

“They like red meat and I would never refuse it, but it’s not something that I would choose,” Kay said. “My father was very healthy and he taught my sister and I that you are what you eat, and you are what you think, and I’ve tried to live by those two things, really and truly, because if you think you’re dumb, guess what? You’re probably dumb. If you think you’re smart, then you’re probably smart.”

“So, I have always thought I am what I think, and that’s why I think positive,” Kay added.

Kay’s Favorite Role Of Matthew’s

In this same interview, Kay revealed that her favorite role of Matthew’s was his Oscar-winning turn in Dallas Buyers Club.

“He did a really great job, really and truly,” said Kay. “That made me cry.”

In his Oscars speech in 2014, Matthew made sure to thank his mother, who he brought to the ceremony.

“To my mother who’s here tonight, who taught me and my two older brothers — demanded — that we respect ourselves,” he said as he accepted his Oscar. “And in turn we learned we were better able to learn how to respect others. Thank you for that mama.”

Kay is truly an inspiration. Indeed, Matthew is lucky to have a mother like her. In the end, we could all learn a lot from Kay’s “don’t stress” mantra!
