On Sunday night, the legendary comedian Martin Short won his first Screen Actors Guild Award. Indeed, he took home the trophy for outstanding male actor in a comedy series for his work on the hilarious Hulu show Only Murders In The Building.
Sadly, however, Short had to miss the awards show, and the reason why is heartbreaking!
Short Wins SAG Award
Short, 74, could not attend the ceremony, leaving presenters Joey King and Jack Quaid to accept it on his behalf. In winning this award, Short beat out Jeremy Allen White (The Bear), Adam Brody (Nobody Wants This), Ted Danson (A Man on the Inside) and Harrison Ford (Shrinking).
Not exactly a “gimme” by any means, considering the heavy hitters on that list.
This came after his Only Murders costar Steve Martin recently revealed that Short has been battling COVID-19 as of late. A rep for Short has since confirmed that this COVID-19 battle is the reason that the star could not attend the SAG Awards last night.
“The honor of being in Only Murders in the Building is the most spectacular compliment anyone could be given,” the rep added to People Magazine. “The honor of being awarded by your peers is even greater. Thank you so so much.”

Only Murders In The Building Wins Best Ensemble
It was a big night for Only Murders in the Building at the SAG Awards. The entire cast also won the award for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a comedy series. Star Selena Gomez accepted this award without Short and Martin, and she couldn’t help but admit how shocked she was by the victory.
“We never win. This is so weird!” said Gomez, 32, with a laugh. “Marty and Steve aren’t here because, you know, they don’t really care.”
“But I just, I don’t know what to say,” she continued. “Thank you to Marty and Steve for — well they raised me. But I genuinely am just so grateful to everybody. The writers, everyone deserves this. And I take it home for all of us, and I’m bringing this back to New York for season five. Thank you so much. I’m so grateful.”

Only Murders In The Building
Short, Martin, and Gomez star in Only Murders in the Building as three New Yorkers living on the Upper West Side who bond over their love of true crime podcasts. They quickly find themselves at the center of a few true crimes.
Short and Martin praised Gomez in an interview with People Magazine last year.
“I think it just gets deeper and deeper and deeper,” Short gushed of his friendship with Gomez. “She is so lovely as a human, she’s so remarkable as a talent, and she just has an aura and this lovely spirit. Our friendship grows and grows.”
“We didn’t really know Selena, we didn’t know what we’re getting into. I knew she has a fabulous personality, she’s very smart. But she is never late,” added Martin, describing this as “a very big deal” on sets.
