Back in February, we reported that the comedic Hollywood star Martin Short’s daughter Katherine died by suicide. She was 42 years-old. Afterwards, Short was reportedly “inconsolable” over his beloved daughter’s death.

Now, Short is breaking his silence about Katherine’s passing for the first time. Indeed, he is describing her death as being a “nightmare.”

Short Discusses Katherine’s Suicide

Short, 76, told CBS News Sunday Morning that Katherine’s death has been “a nightmare for the family.”

“But the understanding [is] that mental health and cancer, like my wife’s, are both diseases, and sometimes with diseases they are terminal,” Short continued.

“And my daughter fought for a long time with extreme mental health, borderline personality disorder, other things, and did the best she couldn’t until she couldn’t,” he added.

Short’s wife Nancy Dolman died of ovarian cancer back in 2010 at the age of 58. She and Short had been married for thirty years at the time of her death.

During their marriage, Short and Dolman adopted three children. Katherine was the oldest, with their younger two children being Oliver, 40, and Henry, 36.

Katherine’s Death

Katherine, who worked as a social worker, was found dead in Los Angeles, California on February 23. Law enforcement sources told TMZ that she died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The LAPD and the fire department rushed to her Hollywood Hills home on the day of her death, finding her deceased just after 6:40pm.

“It is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short,” the Short family told People Magazine at the time. “The Short family is devastated by this loss and asks for privacy at this time. Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world.”

Days later, it was reported that Short was struggling greatly with Katherine’s death.

“Short is inconsolable,” a source close to the family later told Daily Mail. “This is as much of a horror to Martin and his sons, her brothers, as humanly possible.”

“For someone who brings so much joy to so many, who is always trying to lift others up and make them laugh, this loss has completely shattered him,” the insider continued. “He is gutted, and as you would expect, his closest friends are surrounding him with love and support.”

The 2010 passing of Short’s wife has only made this tragedy more difficult to handle.

‘”Bringing his children into his world through adoption with his wife, Nancy, who passed away, was the greatest thing he has ever done. And to lose Katherine is just as bad and sad as it was to lose Nancy,” the source lamented. “It is just a terrible time for Martin right now, but that is to be expected.”
