Back in August, we reported that the singer Mariah Carey had announced that her mother and her sister had died on the same day. Now, it’s been revealed that Mariah will soon be forced to battle her brother Morgan Carey in court.
Mariah And Her Brother Heading To Court
In legal documents obtained by Fox News, a judge ordered Mariah, 55, and Morgan, 64, to sit for depositions in the latter’s defamation lawsuit before January 31, 2025. This order was filed just three days after the death of their mother Patricia, 87, and their sister Alison, 63.
Despite being estranged from Alison for many years, Mariah was still left devastated by the deaths.
“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend,” Mariah told People Magazine at the time. “Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.”
“I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed,” she continued. “I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

Morgan’s Defamation Lawsuit
The latest legal filing stems from Morgan’s 2021 lawsuit for defamation against Mariah. In it, he alleged that the mentions she made of him in her 2020 memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey are “false and defamatory, personally invasive and painful, and have caused serious damage to his reputation and to his personal and business affairs.”
Meanwhile, Morgan went on to say that “the damage was intended.” He used an interview that Mariah did with Oprah Winfrey as evidence of this. In this interview, Mariah called Morgan her “ex-brother” and alleged that he “drew first blood.”
Morgan is seeking punitive damages with this legal action. However, he has not specified a sum of money because his focus is on seeking “judicial determination that many of the passages in it which are of and concerning him are false and defamatory.”
He also wants to “undo the damage which these false and defamatory passages have caused and will cause him in his personal and business life.”

Mariah’s Estrangement From Her Siblings
Mariah had been estranged from both Morgan and Alison for many years. In her memoir, she wrote that it was “emotionally and physically safer” not to have contact with them.
“For my sanity and peace of mind, my therapist encouraged me to literally rename and reframe my family … Morgan my ex-brother and Alison my ex-sister … I had to stop expecting them to one day miraculously become the … big brother and big sister I fantasized about,” she wrote.
“I had to stop making myself available to be hurt by them,” she added. “It has been helpful. I have no doubt it is emotionally and physically safer for me not to have any contact with my ex-brother and ex-sister.”
Mariah also claimed that Morgan would have violent fights with their mother Patricia when she was growing up.
“Suddenly there was a loud, sharp noise, like an actual gunshot. My brother had pushed my mother with such force that her body slammed into the wall, making a loud cracking sound,” she wrote. Next thing I knew she was totally limp, as if her bones had melted, folding onto the floor. It was a split second. It was an eternity. My eyes were still fixed in place, only now I was looking at my mother collapsed in a crumpled pile on the floor.”
It’s always sad to see a family be torn apart. As the only two surviving blood relatives in this family, it would be nice to see Mariah and Morgan find some way to reconcile. Sadly, it seems that this is simply not in the cards for them at the moment.
