The Oscar-winning Hollywood legend Liza Minnelli, whose mother was the late great Wizard of Oz star Judy Garland, is one of the most iconic performers of all time.
Sadly, despite her record of accomplishments, she has one regret from her life that will likely break your heart.
Minnelli’s One Regret
Minnelli, 78, won an Oscar for her extraordinary work in the 1972 musical Cabaret. In the decades since then, she’s earned herself countless other accolades that would surely make her late mother proud. However, in the new documentary Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story, which is currently playing in select theaters, Minnelli’s one alleged regret from her storied life has been revealed.
According to those close to her, Minnelli’s main disappointment from her life is that she never started a family of her own.
“I desperately want a family. I really want a family,” Minnelli is seen telling Geraldo Rivera in a clip featured in the documentary.
Even more tragic, it’s not for a lack of trying. This clip is followed by three headlines depicting various pregnancy losses that Minnelli allegedly suffered.
“We have been with Liza through all her emotional setbacks, like miscarriages,” said Allan Lazare, who was friends with Minnelli for over 50 years before he died in February of 2024.
“If she had to pick one thing that she’s disappointed in her life and that’s not being a mother,” he continued. “She would have been a great mother. She has so much to give. She’s been so wonderful with our children.”
Minnelli has been married and divorced four times. Sadly, she was never blessed with children of her own.
Minnelli Would Have Been ‘An Incredible Mother’
Lazare went on to describe the close relationship that Minnelli has always had with his own daughter.
“We have a picture when our daughter was 3 years old around a Christmas tree [with] Liza hugging her and then 35 years later, when our daughter had a 3 year old, we have a picture around that same Christmas tree,” he recalled.
Lazare’s wife Arlene added, “She taught our daughter when she was 6 years old how to sing [Minnelli’s signature song] ‘Liza with a Z.’… Our daughter was so proud to sing it, and she sang it all over the place for everybody.”
Just before his death, Lazare talked about how much Minnelli has meant to his family.
“She would have made an incredible mother, and life wasn’t perfect,” he concluded. “But she moved on, and she’s become part of our family. I think that’s part of our attraction for her. We’ve kept this bond with sort of a family she didn’t have.”

Mia Farrow Weighs In
Minnelli has touched the lives of other friends’ children as well. Indeed, the legendary Hollywood star Mia Farrow, 79, is also featured in this documentary.
“She’s godmother to my twins, who are 50 now, and she’s never missed a birthday, anything,” Farrow said.
The singer Michael Feinstein, 68, has been a longtime friend of Minnelli’s. He explained that maintaining close relationships with the children of her friends has been a huge comfort to her.
“Even though she wasn’t able to have children of her own, she seems to have created her own family through all the children who came into her life and all the godchildren,” he said.
While it’s sad that Minnelli never got her wish to become a mother herself, it certainly seems like she’s made a huge difference in the lives of her friends’ children. God bless you, Liza Minnelli!
