The Oscar-winning Hollywood star Kevin Costner has just made a shocking career move after a difficult professional time for him. Indeed, this comes after Costner’s infamous bitter Yellowstone exit and his $100 million Horizon movie series flopping.
Costner’s Shocking Career Move
Amazon MGM Studios announced on Monday that Costner, 70, has been cast to star in the new dramedy Honeymoon with Harry alongside Jake Gyllenhaal, 44.
“When a man’s fiancée dies two days before their wedding, he decides to take the honeymoon with his would-be father-in-law,” the movie’s official IMDB synopsis states.
Glenn Ficarra and John Requa have signed on to direct the film, which is based on Bart Baker’s 2016 book “Honeymoon with Harry.”
Costner’s Horizon Fail
This has come as a surprise, as it will be Costner’s first project since Horizon flopped at the box office. Horizon was Costner’s passion project, and he’d been working on it for decades. It was meant to be a four-part Western movie series.
However, the first Horizon movie had a lackluster box office after it premiered on June 28, 2024. Despite this, Costner claimed at the time that he was “really happy” that Horizon looked “like what it’s supposed to look like” on the big screen.
“That’s really important to me in this process,” Costner told Entertainment Weekly days after the box office flop. “Would I love that it would be highly, highly successful? ‘Of course, I’d like that. My ego would like that; everyone would like that. But I am happiest that the movie that you and I are talking about looks the way I want it to look.”
The failure of Horizon was all the more disappointing given the fact that Costner had left the hugely popular television series Yellowstone to make it.
Costner’s Yellowstone exit was notoriously bitter, as he declined to return to film the second half of the fifth and final season because it conflicted with the filming of Horizon. Instead, his iconic Yellowstone character John Dutton was killed offscreen, much to the dismay of fans.
Costner Refuses To Retire
Despite these major disappointments, Costner refused to give up on his career. In a June interview, Costner confirmed that he had no plans to slow down anytime soon.
“I don’t even think about retiring, because I’ll just move to the next thing that captures my imagination,” Costner told People Magazine. He added that his own imagination “is what determines what I do, not a boss.”
“I’ve felt really lucky in my life,” he continued. “I’d like to think that I worked for all of it, but not everybody can live by the same blueprint.”
When asked if he has a “bucket list” of what he wants to accomplish in his career, Costner replied, “I don’t have those things.”
“I have that list, [but] I don’t refer to it that way,” he explained. “But certainly my eyes and my enthusiasms are wide open and very big.”
Costner went on to say that he has “enjoyed life and imagining what I can do, what can I be about and what makes a difference. Not only to me, but to other people. What just satisfies me?”
“I go through that whole idea, and you realize it’s about time,” he concluded. “It’s a rush to get to all of them.”
While Costner likely isn’t happy with how his career has gone in recent years, we’re glad he’s not giving up. We can’t wait to see Costner’s new movie Honeymoon with Harry when it finally comes out!
