We previously reported that Kelly Clarkson ex-husband Brandon Blackstock died on Thursday at the age of 48. This tragically came after a private three year battle with cancer.

Kelly And Brandon ‘Changed Their Perspectives’

Kelly and Brandon, the former stepson of Reba McEntire, were married from 2013 until they split in 2020. It took until 2022 for their divorce to be finalized, however, as things took a bitter turn with a series of messy legal battles.

Now, insiders are saying that despite earlier reports to the contrary, Kelly was not “closer” to Brandon before his death. Instead, her focus was on helping their two young children River Rose, 11, and Remington, 9, deal with this incredibly tragic situation.

Insiders alleged that during his private three year battle with melanoma, Brandon and Kelly “changed their perspectives” on life following their bitter divorce.

“Co-parenting was not easy for Kelly because she was the one who had to transport the kids, so it was really her life that was always turned upside down,” a source told US Weekly. This insider added that Brandon’s health diagnosis didn’t bring the former couple “closer together.” Instead, it “changed their perspectives.”

“She is their [children’s] primary parent,” the source explained. “But this was catastrophic for them, so immediately Kelly went into mom mode and focused on the kids and how they were coping.”

Kelly Stepped Up For Her Children

Kelly also made sure that daughter River Rose and son Remington “were with their dad and his family as much as possible.”

“She made a lot of concessions to make that happen. They have had a bunch of family events in the past months that she allowed her kids to be present for,” the source continued. “They were out there [in Montana] visiting him, and I know she let them miss school a bunch to attend a family wedding and Reba [McEntire’s] rodeo concert, as well as some other things that the entire family did together. She felt it was important.”

Brandon died last Thursday at the age of 48. The insider said that his death was “devastating for everyone.” It also was “not expected — not in this timeframe, at least.”

Kelly first alluded to Brandon’s rapidly declining health last Wednesday, when she postponed the remaining August shows of her Las Vegas residency.

“Unfortunately, I need to postpone the remainder of the August Studio Session dates in Las Vegas,” Kelly said in a statement shared to social media.

“While I normally keep my personal life private, this past year, my children’s father has been ill and at this moment, I need to be fully present for them,” the original American Idol winner added. “I am sincerely sorry to everyone who bought tickets to the shows and I so appreciate your grace, kindness and understanding.”
