Katy Perry is currently one of the most famous pop stars in the world. However, there have been times where she’s received more than her fair share of backlash from fans.
In a new interview, Perry is opening up about how she leans on her spirituality to get her through life’s “tough times.”
Perry’s ‘Controversial’ History
While being interviewed by Ryan Seacrest on his radio show, Perry was asked if she thinks her 2008 hit “I Kissed A Girl” was “controversial.”
“All of my songs are, actually,” replied Perry, 39. “I’m a polarizing figure.”
Perry has received backlash for many things over the years. She was accused of being “condescending” to contestants during her time as a judge on American Idol. Perry left the show at the end of last season after seven seasons. In the next American Idol season, she will be replaced by Carrie Underwood, who won season four of the singing competition.

Perry’s June single “Woman’s World” and her upcoming album “143” have been hit with backlash because she made them with the music producer Łukasz Sebastian Gottwald, who is known professionally as Dr. Luke. This producer was accused of sexual assault and battery by the singer Kesha back in 2014.
Dr. Luke then filed a countersuit citing defamation, and the two ultimately settled in 2023. However, Dr. Luke is still “canceled” in the eyes of many fans. Perry has been slammed for trying to make a female empowerment album with a man who had been accused of such a thing.
Perry Leans On Her Faith
However, Perry has remained unfazed by all of this. She told Seacrest that she leans on her spirituality to get her through “tough times” such as these. She explained that transcendental meditation has “changed her life,” as she’s practiced it for 15 years.
“Presidents, Fortune 500 people, all kinds of leaders, this is their number one tool,” Perry said.
Perry went on to explain the spiritual meaning behind naming her album “143.”
“It shows up anytime … I need a little confirmation or a sign from my highest guide or angel,” she said. “It’s my angel number because I was going through a tough time, a medical situation with my family. I was getting really, really anxious, and I needed something.”

Perry’s Christian Upbringing
Katy Perry is no stranger to spirituality – her parents are Pentecostal preachers. She was raised as a Christian and began her music career as a Christian artist. Perry previously opened up about how she sees her faith today.
“I would call myself, define myself as a seeker,” she said. “I’m a complete seeker of anything faith-based, of God, a lot of different religions. I am a seeker towards better human evolution.”
“I guess my relationship with God is not based on a denomination or a specific rule set coming from the Bible or a belief system; it’s really widespread,” she continued.
That being said, Perry wants to make it clear that she does have a relationship with God.
“Every morning I wake up and it’s the very first thing I say, ‘Thank You, God, for today, I am grateful in every way,'” she stated. “If it gets really hard, I walk around and say, ‘I am grateful!’ … That’s been the light at the end of my tunnel.”
“My hope is that something bigger than me created me for a purpose and reason, that I’m not disposable,” Perry concluded.
God bless Perry for being so open about her spirituality. We can all learn a lot from how she leans on her faith during the “tough times” that we all face in life!
