The pop star Katy Perry will be heading to space this year with an all-female crew aboard Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin.
Joining her will be the CBS host Gayle King and Lauren Sanchez, the fiancé of the Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.
Perry Is Heading To Space
Sanchez, who is a helicopter pilot, picked the crew that will be joining her for this flight herself. The spaceflight will be about ten minutes long, and it’ll take place sometime in the spring.
The other women on the flight will be the former NASA rocket scientist who now heads an engineering firm Aisha Bowe, research scientist Amanda Nguyen, and movie producer Kerianne Flynn. This will be the 11th human flight for Blue Origin’s New Shepard program.
“This mission will be the 11th human flight for the New Shepard program and the 31st in its history,” Blue Origin said in a statement obtained by Fox News. “To date, the program has flown 52 people above the Kármán line, the internationally recognized boundary of space. This is the first all-female flight crew since Valentina Tereshkova’s solo spaceflight in 1963.”
Sanchez Responds
Sanchez took to Instagram to post a video in which she celebrated this upcoming trip.
“If someone would have told me that I would be able to go to space one day, I would have definitely laughed,” Sanchez admitted.. “I can’t believe it’s happening.”
“My dad used to teach people how to fly and I used to hang around the hanger, and I thought dreaming of becoming a pilot was a huge deal. And this is even bigger!” she continued. “The incredible women that are going on this flight are extraordinary in all of their fields, but more importantly they are incredible storytellers.”
“So, what I’m hoping that this flight is transformative for them but also for all of the people they tell their story to,” Sanchez concluded. “Hopefully it sparks that imagination to dream big and reach for the stars.”

King Is ‘So Afraid’
King reacted to news of the space trip on CBS Mornings on Thursday.
“I have to tell you, I’m so afraid,” an emotional King confessed. “I am, I’m so afraid, but I’m also so excited about it.”
King went on to say that though it was “never [her] dream” to travel to space, she decided to go after talking to her children and her best friend Oprah Winfrey.
“I don’t know how to explain being terrified and excited at the same time,” she stated. “It’s like how I felt about to deliver a baby.”

Perry ‘Is Honored’ To Be Heading To Space
Perry has yet to respond to this space trip herself. However, Blue Origin said that “Katy is honored to be a part of Blue Origin’s first all-female crew and hopes her journey encourages her daughter and others to reach for the stars, literally and figuratively.”
Though it’s surprising that each of these women will be going to space, fans are most shocked that Perry of all people is making the trip.
“Katy Perry going in space was not in my bingo card,” one social media user commented. Another added, “Katy Perry is going to space? I was not expecting that.”
“Katy Perry being launched into space should be televised in every classroom across the nation,” a third user wrote. A fourth stated, “Y’all why are Gayle King and Katy Perry going to space?”
