Kate Middleton, the wife of Prince William, spent much of last year battling an unspecified form of cancer. Thankfully, she announced in January that her cancer was in remission, and she has since slowly returned to royal duties.

Now, insiders are saying that Kate is lucky to be alive after this cancer battle. Indeed, according to well-placed insiders, Kate went “to hell and back” while fighting cancer. Indeed, a source told the Daily Mail that Kate is “fortunate to be even speaking of recovery.”

Kate Is Reportedly Lucky To Be Alive

Kate’s cancer was discovered after she underwent abdominal surgery in January of 2024. She then spent much of the rest of the year undergoing cancer treatments at the Royal Marsden Hospital. There, she was surgically fitted with a semi-permanent “port” in her chest. It was through this device that her chemotherapy treatments were administered.

“This small device was inserted under the skin and kept in place until her treatment (delivered via the port through a special needle and a thin tube in vein close to the heart) was over, several weeks later,” The Mail reported.

“I can say that, from what I understand, she is fortunate to even be speaking of recovery,” wrote the Daily Mail’s royal correspondent Rebecca English.

“On some levels I actually think this is a good reminder that she was really seriously ill last year and underwent a significant period of chemo,” said one insider. “As anyone who has been through that experience will tell you, you can feel very unwell for a long time afterwards. It can take years [to recover].”

Kate’s Slow Return To Royal Life

This is why Kate is taking things slow when it comes to returning to royal duties.

“She wants to find the right balance and work with a greater degree of flexibility than before,” the source explained. “This is a woman who plays a very important role in the monarchy [as Princess of Wales and future Queen], but in order for her to do it, both now and in the future, she needs to get this right.”

Kate will reportedly be laying low this week. Insiders say she won’t be seen publicly. Next week, however, it is “very likely” that Kate will attend the Wimbledon tennis tournament. This will be part of her role as royal patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.

Kate Backs Out Of 2025 Royal Ascot

This comes after Kate sparked fears over her health last month when she pulled out of an appearance at the 2025 Royal Ascot at the last minute. Buckingham Palace offered no explanation for her absence, only saying that Kate was “disappointed” to miss the event.

Instead, Kate’s husband William attended with his father King Charles and stepmother Queen Camilla. Kate’s mother Carole Middleton was in attendance as well. This only led to more questions as to why Kate would back out.

Those close to Kate have stayed quiet about this absence, as they do not want to fuel speculation about her health. However, one friend of Kate’s indicated that her cancer recovery might be the reason she missed this event.

“Catherine knows she should not overdo things,” this insider told Daily Mail. “She is grateful that her recovery has gone well, but things have not been plain sailing.”

“She had a busy day at Trooping the Colour at the weekend and, if she’s feeling slightly under the weather, it’s better that she takes it easy,” the friend concluded.
