In November of last year, we reported that Jennifer Lopez was terrified that she would be subpoenaed in the sex trafficking trial of her ex-boyfriend Sean “Diddy” Combs. While this hasn’t happened yet, Lopez has indeed found herself being dragged into his trial this week as a disturbing old interview of hers has surfaced.

Lopez Dragged Into Diddy Trial

As Diddy’s trial continues, a 2002 interview that Lopez, now 55, did with Diane Sawyer has surfaced. During this interview, Lopez reflected on her time dating Combs.

“It just wasn’t a good relationship for me,” she said. “I had to learn to care about myself a little bit more and put up certain boundaries.”

Lopez dated Diddy from 1999 until 2001. When asked by Sawyer if her younger self was afraid during that time, Lopez replied, “Um, no, I don’t think she was afraid, I just think that I, at that time was uh, cared very deeply for Sean, and you know we just… didn’t have the same kind of ideals about life and family and stuff like that.”

“It just wasn’t a good relationship for me,” Lopez reiterated. “It didn’t have so much to do with him as it had to do with me at the time.”

“I had to learn to care about myself a little bit more and put up certain boundaries of what I would accept and wouldn’t accept because really he was just being himself,” she continued.

“He wasn’t doing anything wrong, and he felt like he loved me very much and I know he did and I felt like the same way,” Lopez concluded. “So if I was unhappy in some way, then I was the one who had to do something. Not him. He was doing everything he wanted to do.”

Diddy On Trial For Disturbing Charges

Diddy, 55, is currently on trial for racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking, and transportation to engage in prostitution.

Lopez has found herself in hot water over this 23 year-old interview, as it sounds to some like she is defending Diddy. Sources close to Lopez told Radar Online that she is “disturbed” that her past words on Diddy are being reinterpreted out of context. However, Lopez reportedly also acknowledges that “time and hindsight allow for deeper understanding.”

A former industry executive who was close to Lopez and Diddy at the time that they dated recently opened up about their relationship.

“It was always clear that Jennifer was walking a tightrope,” the former executive said.

“She was emerging as a global superstar, and Sean was already established and very controlling,” the ex-executive added. “That kind of relationship can shape a person’s public voice, especially back then.”

Diddy Talks Lopez

Diddy previously told Entertainment Tonight that Lopez is “without a doubt” one of the greatest loves of his life. In that 2017 interview, he reminisced about attending the 2000 Grammy Awards with Lopez. It was there that Lopez wore her legendary green Versace dress.

“I thought it was gonna really change the game as far as for her and fashion,” Diddy recalled. “I didn’t know how big it was gonna be, but it was a great moment for her.”

“She deserved it,” he continued. “She is one of the fliest out there.”

Diddy is potentially facing life in prison if convicted on all charges. He has been locked up since September of last year. Diddy has been repeatedly denied bail, as he’s seen as posing too much of a flight risk.

Being dragged into Diddy’s trial is undoubtedly the last thing Lopez needs right now. Indeed, like virtually all other A-list celebrities, Lopez has been trying to distance herself from Diddy since his arrest. Only time will tell if Lopez is dragged into Diddy’s trial any further.
