The country music star Jelly Roll praised God at the Grammys on Sunday night. He did so while accepting the Best Contemporary Country Album Grammy Award for his “Beautifully Broken” catalog.
Afterwards, Jelly Roll defiantly refused to talk about politics. Indeed, unlike many of his fellow celebrities, he has no intention of ever doing that publicly.
Many of the speeches at the Grammys were about politics. A lot of them were condemnations of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as well as commentary on other things going on in the country right now.
In contrast, Jelly Roll used his acceptance speech to praise both Jesus and his beloved wife Bunnie XO. In the wake of this, Jelly Roll opened up about exactly why he won’t be wading into political waters like so many of his fellow entertainers do.
Jelly Roll Refuses To Talk Politics
After accepting his award, Jelly Roll was asked if he would be “willing to comment on what’s going on in the country.” Jelly Roll defiantly responded by saying “not really.”
“So this is the truth, and I’m glad somebody asked, because I love talking about this stuff, and people care to hear my opinion, but so I can tell you that people shouldn’t care to hear my opinion,” Jelly Roll explained.
“You know, I’m a dumb redneck, like, I haven’t watched enough,” he continued. “I didn’t have a phone for 18 months.”
That was seeming a reference to the time that Jelly Roll spent behind bars, something he’s been very open about.
Jelly Roll went on to admit that he’s “so disconnected” from the news cycle and current world events. He credited this to his difficult upbringing.
“I grew up in a house of, like, insane pandemonium,” he recalled. “I didn’t even know politics were [expletive] real until I was in my mid-20s in jail.”
“Like, that’s how disconnected [you are] when you grew up in a drug-addict household,” Jelly Roll added. “You think we, like, had common calls about what’s happening in rural politics? Like, we’re just trying to find a way to survive, man, you know?”

Jelly Roll’s Powerful Grammys Speech
This came after Jelly Roll boldly declared in his Grammys speech that “Jesus is not owned by any political party.”
“First of all, Jesus, I hear you, and I’m listening. Lord, I am listening. Lord,” he said onstage. “Second of all, I want to thank my beautiful wife. I would have never changed my life without you, I would have ended up dead or in jail. I would have killed myself if it wasn’t for you and Jesus, I thank you for that.”
Jelly Roll then talked about how he changed his life in jail thanks to a Bible and a radio.
“And I believe that those two things could change my life. I believe that music had the power to change my life, and God had the power to change my life,” he stated. “And I want to tell y’all right now Jesus is for everybody.”
“Jesus is not owned by one political party, Jesus is not owned by no music label,” Jelly Roll concluded. “Jesus is Jesus and anybody can have a relationship with Him. I love you, Lord.”
Amen to that!

We live in a time when celebrities seem to love the rest of us about politics more than ever. They do this despite the fact that most of them are wealthy elites who have no grasp on what’s really going on in the world outside of their mansions and gated communities.
That’s why it’s so refreshing that Jelly Roll would say that we really shouldn’t care about his political opinions. We applaud him for using his platform to spread the word of God instead of spreading political divisiveness like so many other stars did.
God bless you, Jelly Roll!
