Actor James Woods reacted to news of legendary comedian Bob Newhart’s passing by sharing a brief remembrance of his presence at a table full of “extraordinary men.”
Newhart, a beloved icon in Hollywood, passed away Thursday morning at the age of 94 after a series of short illnesses.
“At my country club I sat at a table we mockingly called the Smart Table,” Woods wrote on X. “Regulars included Jim Garner, Dick Martin, Tom Poston, Carroll Shelby, Dick Crenna, and Bob Newhart.”

Hollywood Pays Tribute To Bob Newhart
Woods, by far, was not the only Hollywood actor to pay tribute to the great Bob Newhart. Remembrances poured in from all corners of the online world.
Other legends of the big screen offered their thoughts, including Jamie Lee Curtis, Mark Hamill, and Morgan Fairchild, along with television stars such as Conan O’Brien and SNL alum Al Franken.
“They will be laughing wherever people go when they leave us. God, he was funny! Bob Newhart. You will be missed!” Curtis wrote on an Instagram post.
“From his groundbreaking stand-up to his two classic sitcoms he gave us a lifetime of laughter,” Hamill emoted. “Truly one-of-a-kind. Thank you Bob Newhart!”
Added Fairchild, “Bob was so kind & such a doll, and always so gracious whenever I ran into him over these decades.”
“A real One-Of-A-Kind! A loss for this town and comedy.”
O’Brien, the former Late Night with Conan O’Brien host added: “Bob Newhart taught countless generations of comedians that you could be funny, smart, uncompromising, and still win on your own terms. This is an immeasurable loss.”
“Bob Newhart was a giant, a genius, and a great guy,” Franken wrote on X. “I’ll always remember when he hosted SNL and did a stellar show. He was, as you might expect, a joy to work with. May his memory be a blessing.”

He Will Truly Be Missed
From his early days as a stand-up comedian to his iconic roles in television sitcoms, Bob Newhart’s deadpan delivery and subtle humor endeared him to audiences of all ages.
Newhart’s career began in the 1950s as a stand-up comedian, where he quickly gained popularity for his unique style and clever wit.
His comedy albums, including The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart, were immensely successful, earning him Grammy Awards and establishing him as a household name.
In 1972, Newhart starred in The Bob Newhart Show, a sitcom that ran for six seasons and became a classic. The show’s success led to another sitcom, Newhart, which ran from 1982 to 1990.
Newhart in the latter played Dick Loudon, an innkeeper in a small Vermont town, further cementing his status as a beloved television icon. The twist ending to the series – which was pure genius – is often considered the best finale in television history.
Younger audiences may know him more for his roles as Papa Elf in the 2003 film Elf or his recurring role on The Big Bang Theory as Professor Proton.
Gone, but never forgotten. RIP Mr. Newhart.
