The Hollywood star Alec Baldwin got some good news from the Santa Fe District Attorney’s Office on Monday. Indeed, his Rust involuntary manslaughter case regarding the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins is officially over.

Baldwin Gets Good News

It was announced yesterday that prosecutor Kari Morrissey has withdrawn the state’s notice of appeal against Baldwin, 66.

“The appeal would have challenged the Court’s dismissal of criminal charges against Producer and Actor, Alec Baldwin which included involuntary manslaughter in the tragic shooting of Cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust on October 21, 2021,” the official statement read.

This came after Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer dismissed the case halfway through Baldwin’s trial over the summer. She did so due to allegations that police and prosecutors withheld evidence from the defense.

“The state’s willful withholding of this information was intentional and deliberate,” Judge Sommer said at the time. “If this conduct does not rise to the level of bad faith, it certainly comes so near to bad faith as to show signs of scorching prejudice.”

“There is no way for the court to right this wrong,” she added.

Baldwin Responds

Baldwin’s attorneys celebrated Monday’s news in a joint statement.

“Today’s decision to dismiss the appeal is the final vindication of what Alec Baldwin and his attorneys have said from the beginning — this was an unspeakable tragedy, but Alec Baldwin committed no crime,” they told The Hollywood Reporter. “The rule of law remains intact in New Mexico.”

This comes three years after Hutchins, 42, was killed on the set of Rust when a gun Baldwin was holding went off. Hutchins was fatally shot and director Joel Souza was injured. Despite Hutchins’ death, Rust was still completed. It debuted at the Camerimage Festival in Poland last month. Baldwin, however, has no intention to see the movie.

“Only because this is obviously the most difficult thing I’ve ever dealt with in my life,” Baldwin told Variety. “Beyond the victims themselves, the thing that most pains me is what it did to my wife [Hilaria],” he continued. “My wife has been very, very traumatized from this. There has been a lot of pain.”

“When you are married to somebody and everything was going fairly well and we had seven kids … and the floor falls out. It’s very frightening and very disturbing,” he continued. “And we are trying to get the wind in our sails, to get away from this stuff. Because the film doesn’t stand by itself. It’s always going to be overshadowed by this.”

Hutchins’ Mother Speaks Out

Hutchins’ mother Olga Solovey fired back by slamming Baldwin for continuing to try to profit off Rust.

“It was always my hope to meet my daughter in Poland to watch her work come alive on screen,” Solovey told The Hollywood Reporter. “Unfortunately, that was ripped away from me when Alec Baldwin discharged his gun and killed my daughter.”

“Alec Baldwin continues to increase my pain with his refusal to apologize to me and his refusal to take responsibility for her death,” she added. “Instead, he seeks to unjustly profit from his killing of my daughter. That is the reason why I refuse to attend the festival for the promotion of Rust, especially now when there is still no justice for my daughter.”

Many feel that Baldwin should have been held accountable for Hutchins’ death. It will undoubtedly come as bad news to these people that Baldwin will now be able to fully put this scandal behind him.

Rest in peace, Halyna Hutchins.
