The Hollywood star Richard Karn, who is best known for playing Al on the sitcom Home Improvement from 1991 until 1999, is speaking out to reveal how he lost thirty pounds.
Karn Loses 30 Pounds
Karn, 68, told Fox News that his motivation behind this was his wife of nearly 40 years, who joined him in this fitness challenge.
“We did this weight-loss thing where we [ate] four ounces of meat, four ounces of vegetables . . . no carbs or not as much carbs . . . we did that for six weeks . . . it really helped,” Karn explained.
“It kind of realigned what you need . . . you don’t pile your plate as high anymore, because you don’t need it . . . after six weeks, I think your body and your mind . . . realizes that helped,” he added.
Karn went on to say that the key to staying fit is “moderation.”
“If you can… don’t have five desserts, have a bite of one,” he explained.

Karn’s Home Improvement Difficulties
Karn also admitted that during his time on Home Improvement, he had an abundance of “craft services.” During those years, he struggled not to give into food temptation.
“All of a sudden, you had food on the set. . . . You could just eat whatever you wanted. You were going out to events where they give you food,” Karn recalled. “At some point, you kind of have to stop and go, ‘You know I really could eat all of this, but I shouldn’t. I can’t…and look at me, I’m 10 pounds more than I want to be’ . . . and everything else is just kind of in moderation.”
That’s why Karn changed his life and lost thirty pounds. Keeping that weight off, however, was a struggle at times.
“I’ve kind of evened out where I want to be,” he stated. “I went down to where my doctor was very, very happy… I almost felt like I looked too thin.”
Karn has been married to his wife Tudi for forty years. He believes that the secret behind their long-lasting union is communication.
“But that means something very different to everybody…how you communicate is very…singular to you,” Karn said. “You might think you’re saying something, but you’re not.”
“Listening, picking what battles that you think are worth standing for, fighting for and appreciate that other person for what they are and what they change into, because after 40 years, we change,” he continued.

Karn’s Bond With Tim Allen
Karn is best known for starring on Home Improvement with Tim Allen. The two of them remain close friends to this day.
“Tim’s a little more serious in life,” Karn previously revealed. “Tim gave us interesting presents for Christmas each year. He once had bikes made for everybody with the Binford logo on them. And then he also gave us Rolex watches one year. Christmas was always a lot of fun thanks to Tim.”
Karn was saddened when Home Improvement ended in 1999.
“It wasn’t really up to me,” Karn lamented. “Tim was ready to go. He really wanted to do other things and at that point it was also when Michael Jordan was leaving the NBA. Jordan made a big thing about wanting to go out on top and Home Improvement was the number one show on ABC when we left.”
After Home Improvement, Karn hosted the game shows Family Feud from 2002 until 2006 and Bingo America from 2008 to 2009. Earlier this month, Karn starred in the German show X-Factor: The Unbelievable.
