Hollywood is in shock after the Oscar-winning star Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife Betsy Arakawa, 64, were both found dead in their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico on Wednesday.
Disturbing new details about their passings have come to light as police are calling their deaths “suspicious.”
Hackman And Arakawa Found ‘Mummified’
Daily Mail obtained a search warrant that states that Hackman and Arakawa’s bodies were found “mummified” in their $3.3 million mansion. Police later told ABC News that the deaths were “suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation.” This was because of all of the “circumstances surrounding” the scene.
Hackman’s body was found on the floor of the mud room. He was wearing gray sweat pants, a blue long-sleeve t-shirt, and brown slippers. A cane was also found near Hackman’s body, and it looked to police like he fell suddenly. Indeed, Hackman “showed obvious signs of death,” as his body was mummified.
“Mummification occurs when a person’s skin and tissues are preserved after their death,” The Mail reported. “While most associate it with ancient Egyptians wrapping the corpses of pharaohs in bandages, it can also be achieved if a body is left in a place with cold, dry air where bacteria struggles to grow. Santa Fe is known to enjoy such a climate during winter.”
Arakawa’s Body Found
Meanwhile, Arakawa was found on the floor in a bathroom with a space heater near her body. She was wearing dark grey sweatpants and a light-colored sweatshirt. Arakawa’s remains were already decomposing. On the bathroom counter, police saw a prescription bottle with pills scattered all over.
Around 10 to 15 feet from Arakawa’s body, police found a dead German shepherd. Thankfully, two other dogs were found alive, with one being near Arakawa’s remains. The other dog was discovered outside the home.
Police found no signs of a possible carbon monoxide leak or poisoning. The New Mexico Gas Company released a brief statement saying that “as of now, there are no signs or evidence indicating there were any problems associated to the pipes in and around the residence.”
Maintenance workers Roland Lowe Begay and Jesse Kesler found the bodies at around 1:46pm on Wednesday. They each said that they had not seen Hackman and Arakawa in two weeks. Indeed, both of them appear to have been dead for quite some time before they were found.
