McSteamy is coming back to our screens for an impactful role on the NBC medical drama Brilliant Minds.

Eric Dane, most well-known for his role in Grey’s Anatomy, has a guest star role in the newer series, appearing in Season 2, Episode 9. He is playing Matthew, a heroic firefighter who is struggling to share his ALS diagnosis with his family.

Not only will Dane be able to take a swing back at his own ALS diagnosis, but bring the disease to the attention of viewers worldwide. Read more below.

Eric Dane and ALS

This role is probably one of Dane’s most symbolic, as he announced earlier this year that he was diagnosed with ALS.

If you haven’t heard of it, ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) is a neurodegenerative disease that slowly paralyzes the body by attacking and destroying the nerve cells responsible for movement. More commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, ALS patients lose the ability to speak, walk, and breathe on their own.

Dane has started showing the progression of his disease more, using a wheelchair, and showing less muscle mass.

He also notably missed a planned Grey’s Anatomy reunion at the 77th Emmy Awards. Dane let the media know he was “getting stitches” in his head after losing balance and falling in his kitchen. He was supposed to present alongside fellow cast member alum Jesse Williams.

What is Brilliant Minds About?

Brilliant Minds is inspired by the life and work of world-famous author and physician Oliver Sacks. In the series, Dr. Oliver Wolf (Zachary Quinto) is a revolutionary neurologist.

Bolstered by a team of interns at Bronx General, he dives into the human mind. Each episode explores the medical mysteries hidden within. The characters also deal with their own relationships and mental health.

The series is currently on its second season, which premiered on September 22nd. The first season was released in 2024.
